    Tach problem

What would cause my tach to freak out jumping 1000-2000 RPM? Beat on the gauge and it quits. Checked connections at back of gauge. Guess I will replace it. Any words of wisdom?

I have the same problem with mine. It will shoot up 1000+ RPMs even though the motor isn't being revved up. I can knock on it and it will level out to the normal level...

Had same thing happen, replaced tach, took care of problem. Now second tach doing the same thing after a year. Have someone check the voltage output of your stator. Tach problems, several have said, was due to voltage output being too high though I haven't actually tested mine yet. Let us know if you find out the definite cause of failure.

On my Stratos I used to have my tach would occasionally get jumpy or read way too high. Talked to my dealer and he said I shouldnt worry.

    Re: Tach problem (dallasdawg)

If your dealer said don't worry, what he meant was he doesn't want to fix it. It isn't going to hurt the engine since you can hear it isn't over-revving. I've had tach problems like that before. There are usually two culprits, either the voltage regulator rectifier (or stator if that's where the signal is coming from) or the tach is going bad. I zigged when I should have zagged and replaced the VRR first. That didn't work so I changed the tach the following year...all good. Not a big problem since you can hear if the engine is acting erratically, but I'm the kind of guy who likes everything working as it should...engineers get a bad rap like that. You can check the voltages coming from the VRR or wherever to see if it is still good. If it tests good you'll just have to buy a new tach. Unless you know of someone with a spare that isn't hooked up.

Mines doing the same thing- will the tach be covered under any warranties? Mine is a 2006 and I'm the original owner.

    Re: Tach problem (LittleBugMan)

A buddy of mine had the same problem. at the owners tourny at lake fork he had the yamaha tech look in to it. after changing tachs, he ran a jumper from the quick disconnect on motor to the green wire on tach. found out that the green wire in the transum to motor conduit was broken. said that was a common problem. they spliced in a new section of wire. all is good now. hope this helps.
