    ZX 190 with 4 stroke

    Anyone running a Yamaha 150 4 stroke on a 18-19 foot bassboat?

Looking at Skeeter zx190 with a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke.

Wondering about hole shot and top end, any other issues?

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (magic)

The 4Stoke 150 is producing better performance than the 2 Stoke Motors. Everything I have heard that is an awesome motor for accleration and top end.
I think my home dealer has sold several of the F150 motors on Skeeters. I'll check to see if they have some performance numbers (I did not see any Yamaha Performance Bulletins).

What's the weight difference? and does it really have better low end torque than a 2 stroke HPDI?

    Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (skeetzx225)

Actually, it does. We have sold quite a few of the ZX 190/F150 combo's. I have a bunch of them on order as we speak. They are all running around 60 and sip fuel. All the customers we have sold them to absolutely love them.

Whats the price difference between the F150 and the 150/175HPDI's? Pretty sure you can get a 175HPDI in the same ballpark as the F150. Better performance, might sip alittle more fuel, though not quite as quiet as the F150. I have the 175 on my ZX 07' and couldn't be happier, seeing 66-67mph with no prop work.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (Phippy)

Phippy, you are correct. There isn't a huge difference in price. (under 2K). The boat does perform the best with the 175 HPDI, but for those wanting a four stroke, the F150 does an outstanding job. Big Al had nothing but great things to say about your rig.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (magic)

Magic, I've fished out of BigAl's SX190/F150. Even without a jackplate we hit 60 speedo(Al's to cheap for GPS), so say around 57-58. Besides the sipping of fuel the F150 is extremely quiet and might add starts even easier than my 175, though mine starts at the first key turn, maybe the word quicker is better.

I doubt there's a huge difference in MPG. Numbers wise I can't comment on but it has to be small. BigAl wanted the 4stroke for its smoothness and quietness, and the obvious savings on fuel. But the kicker was the six yr warranty that came with his new boat compared to my five yr HPDI. It also helps the dealer in CT gave him a heck of a deal he couldn't refuse.

Bottom line is Al got want he wanted and myself as well. I'm a performance geek so maxing out HP on my ZX190 was a must, not only that at the time $600-$700 more for the 175HPDI over the 150HPDI. No brainer.

You won't regret your ZX190 purchase no matter what motor you decide. I looked at all the 18ft boats in the spring before choosing the ZX190. The dealership was the first reason I chose the Skeeter, then fishability, lastly price.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (Phippy)

Again, Phippy is right on. As for the MPG, there will be no big difference, although you won't have to buy any oil with the four stroke. As for speed, we are seeing what Phippy is with the 175 HPDI (66-68), with the 150's (2 & 4 Stroke) we are seeing 60-63. I hope this helps. No matter which engine you go with, you will love the ZX190 for sure.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (Jason Hale)

I'm running a zx 190 with a vmax 150 right now. Like the boat but the engine has been a nonstop problem. Has never started right, this year over 50 % of time won't start (especially if let sit a few days). Been to dealer mutliple times, usually starts for them, but once didn't and they worked on choke. Still never right, last time out there was gas running out by the prop. Back at dealers again. They're trying to get it right but I've lost complete faith in this engine.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (magic)

Hopefully they will get it taken care of. We did see a few of those in 05 and 06 that we changed the choke solenoid on and it fixed the hard starting problem. It looks like it is working, but not closing all the way. Hope this helps and good luck on the new one. I think you will be happy with either the HPDI or the Four Stroke.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (magic)

I'm running an F150 on a Skeeter SL190 fish & ski (18'5"). The ZX190 is the same length, but a tad lighter and faster. Holeshot and top speed are good, if correctly propped for max engine rpm. The ZX190 is rated for 175 hp, which is capable of the mid 60's. I would expect the low 60's for the ZX190/F150. The F150 is very dependable and a top selling Yamaha outboard.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (magic)

    Magic,
Phippy is correct, my priority was a 4 stroke. Never having a fiberglass boat, I bought the SX190 because of the deal I got. If I were to do it over, I would buy a ZX190 but stay with the F150. I don't care about another 6 MPH, "I haven't caught a fish doing 60 MPH". BTW, I'm not " too cheap", to buy a GPS, we just don't have lakes big enough to really get the full benefit of one. And besides that, Phippy needs it to catch fish! LOL! Big Al

The F150 is the best outboard that I have ever owned. I wish Yamaha produced an F175.

Re: ZX 190 with 4 stroke (Doug Vahrenberg)

So from what I am reading, the four stroke 150 will run higher top speed than a 2 stroke 150. I have never had one keep up with me on the lake and my boat runs about 60 GPS. I would have to see it before I believe it
