My friend has a 1984 Evinrude 90hp E90TLCRD and we are putting on a new tach, what pole should we set it on?
Thanks.

I think 6 but I would wait for the gurus to be sure.
Excellent!! Thanks guys.
If the tach is made by Evinrude/Johson and has two settings (5 & 6) the correct setting is indeed "6". The five pulse setting corresponds to a 10 pole alternator. The six pulse setting corresponds to a 12 pole alternator.
If it is an aftermarket tach and has markings like (10 or 12 pole) set it to 12 pole.
Some other tachs are marked 1 2 3 4. If it's marked this way set it on 1 and try it to see if it reads OK. Only one of these settings will give provide a reading thats even close to corrrect.
It is made by Medallion and it has the 5 & 6 pole settings. We set it on 6 and it looks real close on the hose, we find more out when we get it on the water.
Thanks.
