Motor trouble 1998 Yahmaha VMax 150

    I'm open for any suggestions.

What is the best way to remove the fuel filter assembly?

I can see some sort of black foreign material inside. The only thing that I can think of is fuel line.

My motor runs fine for the first 4 or 5 runs, and then under power or at idle it loses power. I found that if I choke it with the key it runs normal for a few seconds.

I used Ezorb for the winter storage and am wondering if it damaged the lines. I've been told ethanol could do this also.

I'm not sure if I can add something to the fuel to remedy the problem.

If you are talking about the motor mounted filter it should go screw off. You should invest in a Racor filter or one of the Yamaha brand filters. They will filter out water and anything else that might get into the fuel tank. Then you can just change the element out once a year and not worry about it.

In addition to the stock screw mount filter? The filter has a threaded bolt on top, but I couldn't determine if the filter housing was threaded into the cap.

I finally found someone with the same problems I am having. I put a post under Yamaha motor board and got excellent help from the Yamaha guys. The filter assembly should spin off with a strap wrench don't use a pair of water pumps like I tried. I have been having the same problem since Ethanol came on the market and I had a separator installed which seems to help. The screen should be replaced I was told not cleaned as suggested in manual. The debris I had looked like sand but was metallic and kind of like rust. It would clog the screen in my filter and I would not get fuel flow at WOT. The assembly is like a separator it spins opposite of what you think it would because it's reversed.

I didn't read your second post. The clear plastic housing does thread up into cap that is secured to the bracket with that top nut. Keep the assembly in place and just unscrew the clear housing downwards.

Tom- Did you say a new filter & separator remedied the problem? I wasn't sure if you may still be having trouble.

I had several problems but the major problem is water leaking into my tank through fuel sender which I'm in process of fixing. If you are just getting debris cleaning or replacing filter element and separator will most likely solve your problem. My problem is almost fixed as soon as I get new gasket.
