    Where best to mount GPS?

My first post to this forum. I just bought a 2005 180SX, got it in my garage on Wednesday. Now, it's time to do some add-ons.

It's got the Lowrance X47 in the dash and at the bow. But, I want to mount my Eagle FishElite 480 (GPS and sonar) from my old boat at the console too because of the GPS capability and the bigger, better resolution screen on the Eagle. I've got a RAM mount and am thinking of just mounting it to the right of the windshield. This way, I can also turn it around if need be to view from the bow platform.

Any ideas or suggestions -- or advice to do something different? I obviously don't want to make a mistake and mess up a "new" boat...

Also, what kind of issues have you found with running multiple transducers glassed in the stern? Any problems I should be aware of?

    Thanks!

Re: Where best to mount GPS? (drchip)

I have the SX190 (same layout) and have mine mounted where your talking about doing yours. I have no problem with reception on the puck. As for the mounting goes, i would say go with s.s. nuts & bolts for the ram mount. That way you don't have anything backing out and its on there solid. As for the puck, mine is screwed down but i wish i would have put it on velcro or a few drops of silicone. The the only thing i would do different. As for the 2 ducer's mounted in the hull, i would think that there would be some interference. Now i do run both of mine at the same time (bow & console) and don't have any problems. Here is a pic of my work. When your drilling holes for the ram mount, drill real slow so you don't chip the gel coat. Some say put masking tape down then drill, i didn't do that and didn't have a problem with chipping. Just take it slow.

    Thanks!

Two more questions. Did you have a fuse bank under there you had to move? Or did you work around it?

And, how did you handle the wiring through there? What's that beside the puck?

Looks like a really nice install. Thanks for the input...

My fuse block was not in the way. So it worked out with out any problems.

It's the wire cover. For the wire part, i drilled a hole there and ran all the wiring through it. I used a hole saw on some scrap plywood. I didn't want the hole bigger than the wire cover. So drilled several different hole sizes and check the wires in each hole. After i ran the wires i covered the hole with the cover. I have seen some setups where they ran the wires under the black part of the dash which is where the radio would go. Kept them from drilling a big hole. Can you picture that? See where my ram mount base is, the black area in front. Looks like they lifted up on it and pushed the wire through.

Both of mine are mounted very simialar to the one in the picture by fishin couillon....I used silicone to mount mine and it works great....I had to remove one to send back for repairs so I borrowed my wifes cake decorating tool to remove it with....just slipped it under there and it came right off.....

Thanks again guys. Especially the advice on drilling...not something I'd have initially thought of since my last boat was aluminum...

I am not try to start an argument but I mounted mine there and it has a difficult time reading. I have the Lowrance 520. I will move my puck to the rear of the boat. I hope this helps.
