    Trim switch woes... HELP

Was out fishing yesterday, and my motor just started triming down on it's own. I finally got it to stop by shaking the switch on the shift lever. The gremlins kept triming the motor down for about an hour!!! Any ideas how to get rid of these trim gremlins?

Re: Trim switch woes... HELP (jc395)

If its not the switch itself that is bad, then more than likely it is the trim relay located on the engine. The switch on the throttle is a normally open switch and it may be broke in a way that it is closed even when the button is not pushed. The relay itself operates so that when you push the trim button, 12 volts is sent to a coil in the relay that in turn closes a contact to complete the electrical loop to the trim device. The coil and contacts are all located within the relay. Sometimes these relays are called ice-cubes because that is what they look like (usually clear plastic cover with a base that has multiple pins sticking out). Usually you can visually inspect the contacts on the relay to see if they are burned or fused together.

If this happens again, I would pull the relay off and check to see if you have 12 volts coming to the coil on the relay. If not, then it is the relay that is bad. If you do have 12 volts, then the trim switch is closed and you will need to replace it.

    Hope this helps!

Sometimes the wiring inside the handle rubs as you advance the throttle. Eventually it wears thru and shorts against the metal handle...the result is the self trimming motor. Pull the cover off the handle and inspect...watch for sparks.

Replace the trim switch, water gets in them and makes the trim run, if its the plastic handle you will get a new handle with the switch in it.

Thanks guys!!!! I'll check into it this weekend. I disco'd the battery to keep the gremlins out.

How hard would it be to replace that handle?

Not to bad if its the plastic handle.....Shift motor in to reverse, at the base of the handle there is a slot that now is facing forward, inside that slot there is a 1/8 inch allen head set screw, back it out 3 turns... DO NOT TAKE IT OUT, remove rubber cover in the center of handle, remove phillips head screw under rubber cover, slide handle off, remove three phillips head screws on back of handle, remove handle....This is where you can either cut the wires and splice, as some do, or remove wire harness from boat, replace with new handle and harness, reinstall.

mine has done the same thing , ended up being in the wires running down inside the handle as they turn to exit the handle. once you take the handle off you'll know which one it is....
