The guys don't do hop up here. But there is plenty of info on OMC hop ups on Scream and Fly.....![]()
There was a guy on here I think from Wisconsin that picked up 13 mph with a madefi system.
He went with the basic efi package and some head and port work.
The XX fronthalf will really wake up that H.O.
Just be aware that the OMC case cannot stand up to the surfacing so you will need a sporty with 1.62s to get full benifit of the Mad system.
Your looking at about 8K for a complete turnkey basic system with sporty or upwards of 16k for an XX front half, MSD, full control efi system. But there ain't no merc gonna touch you on the same boat with this system.
There are some guys on S&F that do OMC, and that is probably the best site. Bass & Walleye Boats Magazine is doing a build up on a 200 Looper, you may want to be looking for the most recent addition, they were supposed to get into some more in depth mods.
I think the used a set of early model heads on it, and put solid motor mounts on the engine, but that was in the last issue. Tony Brucato is supposed to be coming out with an EFI system, and it it will be featured in this series of articles.
Good luck.

the unit they are using on B+WB is a crossflow not a looper. Loopers/closed decks did not come out till 1993 as I have one of the 1993 models. before that they were open decks gt non fingerported. crossflows are easier to do hop ups on that is why so many are used in drag and speed racing.

The motor in Bass & Walleye Boats is a 3.0L Looper. They were open deck non finger ported loop charged motors until 93 or 94 when they changed them to closed decks and added finger ports. Most of the mods in that series of articles will apply to the 225HO johnson, including the EFI system when they get around to it.
They are doing a Looper, not a flow. Go back and re-read the article.
They have a lot of mods planned too, including reeds, porting, higher compression, carbs etc, before they get into the EFI.
A flow may be easier to hop up, but a properly modded looper will wax it. You can have a mildly modded looper make 300 hp to the prop, try and get that out of a flow with any kind of decent reliability.
I have had both engines, the looper is a better motor, imo.

Basic motor info.
Crossflow was available from 76 to 91. From 86 to 91 the highest HP was the GT175.
Loopers came out in 86. The 86 and 87 were open deck 2.7 ltr. models. The GT200 made about 225 at the prop.
In 88 the looper went to 3.0 ltr. but remained an open deck.
The 92 looper added the faststrike trim system.
The 93 loopers were all closed deck motors with finger ports added.
The 2.7 ltr GT200 is considered by many to be the best looper for a true HP build. However the 3.0 closed deck has tighter tolerances and will probably make a better souped-up lake motor. Most drag racers use the open deck 3.0s.
There is a real problem with jetting the loopers for peformance, that is why the efi systems are a MUST for a performance build up.
Yeah or you will enrich your local BRP parts man buying pistons.
Do not mod a looper without EXPERT advice. Thats the most expert advice I can give you on that subject.![]()
