I have a 2011 250 Optimax Pro XS. Apperantly it has a standard gearcase. What is the difference in a standard gearcase and a torquemaster gearcase?
The torque master gear case is the standard gear case on a Mercury 200,225 and 250 Pro XS. Mercury does make a gear case with 1.62 gears that you can put on a 225 threw 250 but that is for your ligher go fast hulls such as an Allision, Bullett boats. It is not worth a flip on a heavy boat such as a Ranger, Triton or any other of your heavy boats.
The Torquemaster gear case was the standard on the Pro XS motors until some time in 2009 when it was replaced with the "Verado style" gearcase. It is now a option. The Torquemaster had a built in torque tab and a prop shaft with several more splines. The "Verado case has larger bearings & gears. At the speeds that Rangers run inc. the Z520 there is no benefit to the Torquemaster.![]()

The Verado style is the one that I have on mine I am told. Is there any problems with this style over the Torquemaster?
No problems, in fact Mercury's decision to make the Verado style case the standard case was based on the rock solid reliability of the Verado gear case.
