    Dirt Dobbers!

Found a dirt dobbers nest on the cap of the VRO oil tank yesterday although, it did not cause any damage, I am now paranoid fearing that one of those pesky wasp might build a nest in the air silencer or one of the carburetors in my beloved XP.
What does everyone here recommend to ward off the dirt dobber wasp? I am thinking about using moth balls tied in an old sock tossed in the bilge and under the engine's hood.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

    Melvin,
Put a strip of painters tape over the exhaust holes and a coffee can lid over the prop, might try some fiberglass screen over the airbox openings.

Maybe a motor cover would make you feel better. I park my boat in an open barn. The dirt dobbers have a colony in there but they don't seem interested in the boat. They probably think that the boat is gone too often to mess with it.

I had a dirt dobber build a nest in my old weed eater, and it woudn't start, duh!! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it for the longest, it didn't sound right when I was yanking on it.

I found a big nest in my newest engine cover the other day too. From the previous owner. I keep mine in the basement so I don't have to worry, but I would be careful and just check it out good. Sucking that much dirt through your engine could not be good for it.

You need to get one of those big screen things they use in the jungle to keep mosquito's off. Pit it around the whole motor.

I Remember back in 1973 getting a call from a guy whose 55 3 cyl Johnson would not run properly & Very hard to start. He was located in a shack about 60 miles away on the River Murray in South Australia. So we loaded our tools & made the trip. Yes motor was hard to start alright. Just could not work out the problem. Plenty of spark, plenty of petrol. To cut a long story short we decided to tear down the carbs. On removing the Air intake, guess what we found, No it wasn't a wasp nest, it was a big fat bullfrog. Somehow it had found its way into a carb intake. Don't ask me how. I'm sure there a million stories like this out there. Lets hear some. Do BRP manufacture a Bullfrog deflector?

I don't suppose the frog survived the experience?

    Re: Dirt Dobbers! (Fishaholic)

Nope it didn't survive. Bit of a 'pong' as well. The reason we made the trip was that the guy had just had the motor serviced by us, within the past week. The customer was a bit irate because he felt we had not done a good job. We felt it was prudent to do the trip & check it out. Customer relations, you know.
Secondly, the reason I included the comment about a "bullfrog deflecter" sic detecter, was because of the comment made recently in the BBC forum about having a sensor within outboard motors which monitors water levels under the motor cover whe backing down in a big sea. I suppose it would be a good thing but where does a manufacture "draw the line". If a sensor was fitted to cover EVERY possible contingincy, the motor would end up being a million dollars each & the user would have so many sirens, horns, buzzers & lights going off that he would spend most of his boating day reading his owners manual.
    Have a great day guys.

Heres a pic of a 18' 200kg Raceboat on Australian E-Bay. 95mph with a 225HO. NICE. CLICK ON THE PIC to see more.
