Did this just happen, what RPM did it turn before, have you changed anything?
5500 rpms is what I normally have the motor has 440 hours on it I did not know if this is something that happens with age or not.also I noticed the sleeve that looks like a piece of hose on the cam follower on the throttle linkage is split don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.Other than replacing steering cables haven't touched the motor with exception of spark plug replacement.
Thanks Brian
Did you remove the motor to get the steering cables out?
No the motor did not need to be removed.
Check the easy stuff first, remove the air box and make sure the throttle plates are opening all the way, see if the Timing roller is moving all the way.
While you have the air box off see if you have any fuel on the outside of the carbs.
I think a bad upper motor mount also causes this issue, but I would check the easy stuff first.

I forgot to mention I also have a have a hot foot installed on this boat.Did not know if these could get out of adjustment or not.I will check the simple stuff tomorrow and let you know what I find.
Thanks for the replies,
Brian
Yep make sure the plates open perpendicular to the the bodies at WOT. If needed disconnect the throttle cable and check via the linkage and then adjust the cable and re-install.
Checked throttle plate today they are all opening all the way, also no fuel on the outside of the carbs.Where do I look for the timing roller?
Thanks Brian
On the top right front side of the motor. Under the fly wheel cover remove the 3 phillips screws and you'll see the roller.
The timing roller seems to be making contact. How do you know if it is moving far enough?

The timing roller seems able to move in its adjustment slot is this normal or should I try to tighten the philips screw holding it?
thanks Brian
Is it loose and can you move it? if the screw is loose then by all means tighten it.
Just wanted to add and I do not no if it matters but the lake I have been fishing is at 2500 feet above see level and And I am normally fishing 600 feet asl would this cause the missing rpms?Reason I thought of this is a guy in my club was telling me his Mercury does not run as good up here at Deep Creek Lake MD.
Thanks Brian
That would make a difference.
Thanks I will be in my normal fishing grounds on the lower potomac and see how it runs and see if it is back to normal.
Thanks Brian
