    2001 Gambler Outlaw questions

I have been shoppin for a boat and I found a 2001 Gambler Outlaw with a mercury 200 efi, 25 high five propeller and hydraulic jack plate in good condition ( sharp looking boat ). However, I have some concerns or questions that I really need input on. It runs 62 gps. The owner puts down the trim tabs, lowers the hydraulic jack plate all the way and off coarse trims the engine down all the way to get on plane. the hole shot is average compare to my old 186 champion and a little slower that my old 196 skeeter which only had a 150 on them. First is this all needed ???????? I am not a pilot. I want a boat that I can set the jack plate up to run 70 mph, a good hole shot, keep good water pressure and leave it alone. Can this be done with this boat ??? Thank you in advance for your help and advice. PS the price is $18,000.00 Any other general comments on this boat will be welcomed.

No, you shouldn't "have" to do all that just to get on plane. I usually set my jackplate on 3.5 to 4 and leave it there all day. I only use the trim tabs if I have a full tank of gas and both livewells full and a fishing partner.

You should be able to find a good height on the jackplate that is a compromise allowing both decent holeshot and top end. Typically the difference between the best of both is less than 2".

The owner may have been "showing off"...???

If it is in good all around condition, $18k is a very fair price.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck and hope to welcome you to the Gambler family!!

Wow, with a High Five prop, that thing out to shoot out of the hole without all that messing around. $18K sounds like a pretty good deal. If I was you, I'd buy it and put a 26 Tempest or 25 Trophy (Gambler guys - jump in here if there's a better prop for him) on that motor and keep the high five for pulling skiers/tubers.

With that High Five prop on there, my guess is that lowering the plate and the trim tabs all the way down is doing more harm to the hole shot than it's helping.

I agree i tried a 25 high five once and it was a rocket out of the hole and the boat turned exceptionally well, but top end was horrible.

my outlaw w/ a 150 will do better than 62 and its the slowest outlaw i know of.i can get 65 gps w/ my trophy + and 69 w/ a 25 tempest, and i have a manual jp. the tempest jumps out of the hole ,the trophy is a dog but the handling is sweet.
you wont be disappointed if you buy it and get it set up right.the outlaw to me is the best med. size boat made for speed ,handling ,and fishability.plus it is the most asthetically pleaseing boat ive ever seen.you should get 72 gps w/ the right prop and set up.
