    G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota?

I want to know if anyone out there has had a similar situation with G3/Yamaha Boats? My experience has been very bad with G3/Yamaha Boats. Below is my situation and I have already heard from several more with the same issues?

If you have had this problem? Can anyone tell me how to repair the boats with this defect? I can be contacted at a-z-b@msn.com if anyone wants to speak to me about this situation?

I have a 17 ft. 2003 G3/Yamaha Boat that was purchased when the boat was only a couple of years old and like brand new. The boat was one of their most expensive models with powder coat finish, carpeting, covered seats, huge gas tank and live well and all of the nice touches that made anyone proud to own the boat. My dad spent his retirement money on this boat for us to use. My dad passed away a little over a year and a half ago.

I strongly encouraged the purchase of this boat to my DAD due to the Yamaha name and the assurance from the dealer that the hull was warranted for six years. I had a Yamaha outboard motor on another boat and this motor had been great and the Yamaha name gave to me great assurance. We paid a lot for this boat at the time of purchase when the boat was still like new. My dad made the comment that the boat would be here for me long after he was gone. My dad was wrong and I was very wrong about G3 Boats and the Yamaha name.

My dad and I were so proud of this boat. The boat ran great on the water, was comfortable and looked great and had the Yamaha name behind it. Last year about mid year I was shocked to find that this boat was essentially worthless and as stated by the dealer where I bought this boat, “you can throw this boat away!”

My wife had discovered a thumb sized hole that had come all the way through the boat that had been hid behind the paint. Upon closer inspection I found numerous oozing holes in the transom that had became more numerous and larger since the last time I had noticed. I thought these oozing holes were due to something(s) having been attached in the past. I thought the oozing was some type of sealer. Finally my wife noticed tiny pin holes coming up all along the side of the outside of the boat at the point where the floor attached to the boats inner hull.

I was truly shocked as I thought my boat was worth about $6000 at the time and had just learned that it was worthless and that the water it had been taking on for about three years was not from a bad boat plug but instead holes in the transom and other places where the marine plywood and its' associated chemicals had eaten away the aluminum.

I immediately contacted a G3 boat dealer in the area where I fish and I was shocked to find that he was not surprised and knew exactly what the issue was with the boat. To my surprise he knew exactly what the issue was as he had other boats with the same issue. He informed me that Yamaha was aware of the facts and to get him some information and he would forward this information to Yamaha. He did not give me much encouragement and told me that he had used JB Weld to fix boat transoms where this known defect had eaten up the transom of a G3.

I finally called him back and received a phone number and a name to contact and was then told by this contact at G3/Yamaha to send then the serial number of the boat and my purchase date which I did. I was also informed again that G3/Yamaha had known about this since 2005 which, in the case of my boat, was a full four years prior to the expiration of the hull warranty.

Yamaha seems to have made no attempt to contact dealers or owners of their boats and apparently chose instead to see if the boats would make it past the six year hull warranty where they could use a technicality to exempt themselves from offering any assistance to their boat owners. In my case I was maybe half a year out, I say maybe, from warranty by the time I discovered what had been going on with my boat for about three or more years. They appeared to have calculated the warranty form the beginning of the 2003 year and did not consider the purchase date as I could have still been in warranty!

G3/Yamaha boats told me that too bad you are on your own! Can you imagine a name like Yamaha, knowingly ignoring a fatal structural defect that they knew would destroy the boat many years prior to its’ normal life expectancy, and leaving customers on their own with a major investment and never bothering to contact anyone in 2005 to inform them of the situation so that repairs could be made years prior to the total destruction of the boat! This is exactly what happened!!!! I had a like new boat that could be thrown away!

It appears there may be many others out there just out of warranty with the same delimit? This is not electrolysis...and instead the marine plywood that was used and the chemicals that were in the plywood. Yamaha/G3 was well aware of the situation advance, never bothered to contact the owners and just set by and, it appears, hoped that the boat would become worthless just outside of the warranty period!

My e-mail is a-z-b@msn.com for anyone that may have questions. I would stay away from this boat and find one that has a better track record. Do not be fooled as this boat has the Yamaha name only!

Below is the letter that I wrote to the dealer upon his request when I contacted him about my boat:

Per your request, I am sending you the serial number for my G3 Pro 175 Boat that has holes and pits in the transom and along the sides of the boat. The number is ???????????? and it was manufactured in 2003. I have since found out that this boat was given in replacement by G3 for another G3 riveted boat that was leaking badly at the rivets.

I had noticed what looked like holes in the transom about two years ago when I saw leakage around what I assumed were prior drilled holes. I did not pay a great deal of attention to it until this past weekend when my wife actually spotted a finger size hole in the side of the boat that goes all the way through and other pits and a pin hole that appears to be all the way through approximately where the floor meets the side of the boat.

Upon closer inspection, I saw that there were more holes in the transom than I had seen before and they were larger. I was shocked at what I found. I had intentionally looked for and purchased a G3 boat due to my confidence in the Yamaha name and my great experience with the Yamaha motor which both my dad, brother and my self owned. My dad had finally found a G3 boat in like new condition and we purchased it right away. I nearly fell out when I carried the boat to ‘’’’’’’’’’’ and was told upon initial inspection that “you can throw this boat away!”

I go to Florida about 8 to 10 visits per year. I have always washed this boat every time I would come in from the flats and have been very proud of the boat. I am truly shocked at what I have found. Everybody else is running EXCEL boats with a few exceptions and I have bragged on the smoothness of this hull and how it could take the chop of the flats without wetting you. I am keeping my mouth shut at this point.

I also have a 14 foot Monarch Aluminum boat that was manufactured in 1972
that belonged to my dad and was run in Florida by my dad and myself and was his retirement boat. This boat was run in the flats probably 100 times more that this G3 has ever been on the flats as we purchased this boat approximately 18 years ago and used it exclusively in the flats until the purchase of the G3 boat which we considered a real upgrade. This boat has perfect aluminum and no electrolysis and a great running 1988 Yamaha that replaced the prior 25 HP Evinrude that we wore out on the flats on this same boat prior to this motor purchase.

I will take pictures and send to you as soon as the weather clears as it was pouring here......

Toyota and Yamaha may have more in common than some of thier boat owners ever knew to be the case![/I]

Ok, first I have heard of this one.

I have asked for pics and you replied but no pics. Would not give names of persons talked to at G3 and provided no information about the dealer that knows of this as well.

Not calling you out but not much there to back your story

    Post some pics

Not my experience w/ G3 at all. When I had an issue with a used boat, they took care of it. They replaced my hull when I had transom issues.

Obviously you have had the same transom issue the same as mine that has been fixed...of course I will not answer a stranger with names nor would you...I already have several others that have contacted mw with the same issues.

Eveyone should make their own decisions as to a major expenditure like a boat and all I can do is to share mine. Still looking for someone for informaion as to how to fix the issue if there is a way to do so short of a complete transom replacement?
I still do not recommend a G3 due to my personal experience with this company.

I can not get the pics to l load on this site?

That's what I was thinking tonight or possibly something is grounded to the boat instead of the battery but he says Yamaha and G3 are aware of this problem and have been for some time.

I emailed the QA and tech guy today and asked about a problem like this and he said they have had no problems so I don't know what to say??????

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (Sigma)

I have never left the boat in the water and have never charged the boat in the water. this boat is only used maybe 15 to 20 days out of the year. The boat stays in Florida under cover and we go down maybe 8 to 10 times a year to fish for a couple of days. This is not electrolysis as I was very qucikly told by both the G3 dealor and the customer service contact at G3...they are aware of this problem and it is the marine plywood and the chemicals that were new and being placed into the marine plywood with a start year of 2003. G3 did replace some transoms for some cutomers...Bass Pro shop boats had the same issue...not sure who your contact is at G3 but for a tech he is either having a memory laspe or orther?

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (smithb678123)

One more comment...it really bothers me now that apparently G3 is making no admission of the marine plywood and chemical situation. Now we have gone from a warrenty issue, with admission of a known defect, to a denial of any defect?

My issue all along has been the fact that G3 told me they knew of the issue in 2005 and the fact that no action was taken at that time. This is the first I have heard that G3 denies that this issue existed? Seems to me that we are now charting some pretty choppy waters.

Maybe I should take the boat to a testing facility and have them tell us what the issue might be?

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (smithb678123)

Can you get them to put it in writing ?????????? That would help us all.

I don't doubt that someone told you what they did but who are they and what is there position? If they are answering the phones and talking to customers they must be in some position of authority???? As a G3 owner I certainly want to know as well whats going on and if it could happen to me?

What about calling tracker and ask who supplied there wood for transoms and what the solution was?

According to your link it sounds like a common problem with aluminum and salt water. Is the boat store near a salt water area?

Just to be safe and because it doesn't sound like your the first owner check all the wires and make sure you don't have a ground to boat connection.

I also emailed you the transom wood manufacturer so you could ask them as well.

We are here to help and learn so please let us know what you find and I will continue to research as well for the both of us I have no life

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (Sigma)

Thanks and I appreciate your response.

If it this is a common problem then non one should ever buy an aluminum boat to use in salt water...get fiberglass? Where I fish almost everyone runs aluminum boats in the flats. There are many aluminum boats and I have fished there for about 20 years and I can find no one that has ever had issues such as this one? There are no other G3 boats there for which I am aware.

However, I really think not common and not electrolysis...maybe chemical electrolysis....it was common in 2003 G3 boats and in Tracker boats according to what I was directly told by G3. I was directly told it was the new chemicals that were placed into the transom plywood for the 2003 year by G3. I was also told they had replaced some transoms in some boats with the same issue.

I would much rather be fishing with my G3 boat than dealing with this issue and I am sure that G3 customer service did not make it up, nor the dealer, in order to intentionally discourage future G3 boat sales? Let’s see whoever else has had these same issues with G3 boats?

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (smithb678123)

Yes it is a common problem with aluminum and salt. That's exactly what it says in the link you posted but there are things you can do to limit it and first thing is to check for current in the hull from a stray ground or short

If you are in or near a marina they could actually have a stray current problem and it is effecting your rig.

Did you email the company that made the transom wood? I did but have yet to get an answer from them.

Better yet call them. You can get the warranty transferred over to you and then have them fix it for free under their warranty....Problem solved right?

"My transom wood is made by Aqua Tech and carries a limited life time warranty. That warranty is transferable to the second owner and will afford you the same warranty. If you want more specific info http://www.affiliatedresources.net 1800-288-3802"

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (Sigma)

My issue was NOT wood in the transom. Mine was with a weak design that G3 redesigned and strengthened. Like I said earlier, G3 replaced my hull.

Trent, was your issue with your '05 HP200 - or some other G3 boat? How did your transom fail?

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (mcrolin1)

Mack, my issue was on a 2004 HP200. The old design only had 3 braces at the transom. One started to tear which caused the transom to flex and cause other cracks. The newer design now has 6 pieces that attatch to the transom. There are now 2 pieces at each of the 3 points that make a total of 6. Hope that explains it. They replaced my hull 2 years ago with a hull that was owned by one of the upper management poeple at G3. They offered a new hull if I wanted but was going to take several months to get. By taking the hull from someone at G3 I got my boat back in about a month from the time they picked it up. Just so you know, I was the SECOND owner of the 2004 that had problems. I thought what G3 did was great. I got a newer hull with a stereo, a hot foot and an 80# trolling motor that was not on my original hull.

Re: G3 Yamaha vs. Toyota? (smithb678123)

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.MY BOAT IS A 2003 G3 GATOR SERIES BOUGHT NEW AND REALLY LOVED UNTIL 2 WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AS I NOTICED AWET SPOT ON MY TRANSOM,UPON INSPECTION I NOTICED A HOLE.TWO WEEKS LATER 2 MORE HOLE.CONTACTED MY DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS ELECTROLISIS.I ENFORMED THEM THAT I HAD ALREADY CHECKED ALL MY WIRING ,NO STRAY CURRENT,MY BOAT DOES NOT STAY IN THE WATER AND I WASH THIS BOAT EVERY TIME I GO TO THE COAST.I SENT THEM PICTURES THAT HE INTURN SENT TO G3 WITH THE RESPONSE THAT SORRY BUT MY BOAT IS OUT OF WARRANTY.SINCE THEN I HAVE 2 MORE HOLES WITH A TOTAL OF 5 HOLES AT THIS TIME.I CONTACTED G3 MYSELF WITH THE SAME RESPONSE THAT MY BOAT IS OUT OF WARRANTY.I HAVE TAKEN MY BOAT TO A LOCAL DEALER TO LOOK AT MY BOAT AND HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS ,THAT THE PLYWOOD IS HAVING A CHEMICAL REACTION WITH THE ALUMINUM.THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING IN 6 YEARS.I BASICLY HAVE A BOAT THAT IS DETERORATING IN FRONT OF ME DAILY.IF THEY KNOW THIS COULD HAPPEN WHY PUT PLYWOOD IN THE TRANSOM OF AN ALLWELDED BOAT THER IS NO WAY TO REPLACE THIS WITHOUT SOME VERY EXSTENSIVE WORK AND MONEY THAT WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH.G3/YAMAHA SHOULD STEP UP AND FIX THIS PROBLEM ESPECIALLY IF THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM.I WILL NEVER RECOMEND G3/YAmaha TO ANYONE AGAIN. WE ALSO HAVE A 1988 LOWES ALUMINUM BOAT THAT WE HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH.
