gasoline odor in rod box 2000 Cobra 201 SC

I bought this boat as a "demo" in 2001. It has always had a slight gasoline odor in the left hand rod box when garaged for a week or so. I usually leave the box open during storage. The odor is getting stronger as I can now actually smell gasoline when I enter the garage. Anyone know if I can access the fuel cell on this boat by removing the seats?
    thanks.

You have some access holes available when you remove the driver's seat for sure, but I'm not sure about access via the passenger's. If you remove the small glove box (I'm not sure if they did away with it on the '01), you have visibility at the top. I would try to remove the drain grate at the bench area floor and use an inspection mirror and flashlight and inspect what is going on UNDER the tank.

Taking the seats out is a pain if you don't have the removable back inserts, and if your 2000 is like mine, you don't! Before you go through all of that, open yoru gas cap and unscrew the vent button and clean it out. It sounds like it isn't venting properly and the fumes are staying in the boat and building up. Might also make sense that you smell it on the left side.

Other than holes in your tank, you have a gas line that you should be able to see from the middle "seat" position once the seat is out, then I think a vent line that goes from behind the driver's seat around the back tucked up high across the back, tied into the vent cap by a T connection, then back around behind the passenger side seat.

If it weren't for the use of Nylon Straps to hold the seat back in place, taking out the seats wouldn't bee too bad. But limited space and not wanting to create new holes to reinstall the seat, and the straps moving all around while trying to stab the existing hole...........

I had to hold the seat up a little while the wife with smaller hands could get the screws started. "Honey, can you come help me with putting my boat back together?" Yes after fighting with it for 45 minutes and not getting anywhere no matter what I tried, I was ready to ask for help from the Mrs.!!!!!!!

Heck!!! If I had noticed that this was Smitty I would have just given you a call. When your 27c comes in let me know and I will show you how I installed the 25c on the dash. I didn't want to use a ram mount and space is real limited with the cooling fins on the back of that unit.

LOL Thanks Chris and thanks migaz. Chris I did not know you had replied until I saw you tonight. I took the seats out and there are three inspection holes behind the seats. I only found one clamp that I could tighten and it only a turn and a half. I will try your suggestion next. You are right about them being a pain to get back in. Never thought about asking your wife to help.

I had an answer all prepared for your problem, but then I went back and re-read your question and saw that is a "gas-OLINE" problem and dealt with fuel. Sorry I got nothing.

    You guys ROCK!!
