    What kind of steering

Maybe this is not as complicated as it seems, but what kind of steering systems do we have in our boats. I know its a Teleflex mechanical, where I'm confused, is it the rack or is it a no feed back. It's on a 96' 188 with tilt. I want to replace the cables or complete helm or possibly hydraulic if not to many mods and can get it in tilt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your steering system could be either a (dual cable) rack or a rotary helm with or without the No-Feedback System.

Look up under the dash and see if the thing behind the steering wheel the 2 cables run into is basically round (rotary helm) or a long, narrow rectangular box (rack, as in rack & pinion)

Go behind the boat and grap the engine (take your transom saver stick out). Try to swing the engine either way and see if you can make the steering wheel turn.
If the engine won't move but just a very, very slight bit, you have the No-Feedback System. If you can swing the engine and make the wheel turn, it is just a plain 2 cable system without the No-Feedback System.

Any of these above styles and the hyd. steering system can be had with the tilt wheel.

Thanks alot. I was pretty sure it was just the rack but when you go to the teleflex website they don't offer alot of info. I was going to change just the cables but I'm entertaining the thought of upgrading to something else. The boat has always been very easy to drive just don't know if it would be worth it. Again, thank y'all for your help.
