    Thermostat replacement

Is it part of routine maintenance to replace the thermostats in an outboard? I have an offshore boat with twin 2000 150hp Ficht motors and just wanna keep it as reliable as possible. Motors have about 275hrs almost exclusively in saltwater. All maintenance items mentioned in the service manual are being been done this spring including a good decarb. Anything other tips to keep these motors going? So far I couldn't ask for 'em to run any better.

    Re: Thermostat replacement (clydeg)

On a 7 year old salt water outboard, definitely replace all three thermostats on each motor. Also take apart and inspect the pressure relief valve.

There is also an exhuast sensor tube that most folks never clean out and it has a 100 hr. service interval. Follow the small hose down from the EMM to the sensor fitting in the stb. side of the block. If never serviced, it may be jammed in place with carbon and have to be drilled out and replaced.

A service manual is invaluable with this motor, don't try anything without one. There were several model changes in that year so be sure to use the complete model number when ordering parts.
