I have a 98 171 DC I was wondering if someone has ever put a rod locker in the center compartment. Just wondering if this will work or is there something in the way of me not able to do this. The side compartments are to small to hold my rods.

I would think the rod lockers, which go pretty much to the front of the boat inside, would be longer than the center locker.
I would think there would be foam that would need to be removed.
I can fit 7' to 7 1/2' rods in my port compartment.
Do you have a 171?? My compartments can barely hold a six ft rod.
Rod lockers are open in front, so you should be able to angle a few rods in. Brochures say 7' rod length on the 171. Not sure why you can't fit longer than 6'.
I honestly would not suggest cutting the front wall out of your center compartment. I am not sure what support may be there...
Yep, I have a 99' 171.
I fit a 7' rod with no problems. My rods longer than 7' all have the retractable butt section. When I look towards the front of the rod locker(Port side), you can see the trolling motor wires and navigation wires running from the outer wall area towards the center of the boat. I have always been afraid of breaking a rod tip, so I use rod socks on all my rods. You may need to try and re-position the wire tube sleeve up front.
I can fit 10 rods easily into the compartment. 3 of these are 7' rods that don't retract. I just built a rod rack (moosehead style) and installed it. It can hold upto 14 rods! Time will tell if I can hold that many.( I don't have 14 rods to try it yet.)![]()
Just noticed that yours is a DC. That would make getting the rods in and out tougher. There's not much space as it is, is it tight getting in/out from behind the console's to the front deck?
Do you think in the front wall if I took a hole saw and made holes would it weaken that area??
I'm not to keen on cutting holes in my boat. That should be a last resort. When you alter something, there is always a trade off. JMHO

Are you saying in the middle compartment to cut holes in the front? I think from reading posts about guys putting in the recessed trolling motor trays, that there is foam in the front area. I don't think you would gain enough.
Have you looked up the port or starboard lockers to see what is restricting your rod tips.
