    Trailer brakes on 181 trailer....

Hey guys i live in PA and just found out i need to get my trailer inspected on my 181 but cannot get it done because of a lack of brakes. The GVWR on my trailer states 3400 lbs yet the trailer came without brakes.I now must find out what part numbers and size i need and buy electric drum brakes i guess. It is a single axle trailer.Any assistance at all with installation or advice on what to do would be appreciated. Thanks

Contact Lyn Dyer ( http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=383999 ) and he can steer you to a dealer/distributor that can fix you up with the parts you need. Big issue is going to be replacing the coupler with an actuator. That will require some welding and repainting. The rest is pretty well bolt on. Need to weigh that cost against the age of your trailer and replacement cost. I don't know that I've ever seen a single axle trailer with brakes, but I'm sure they are out there.

    Good luck!!

I doubt your rig weighs over 2500lbs. Look deeper into your state regulations before you drop the cash. I would also think that electric brakes and water might not mix well.

My 99 187 single axle came with surge brakes. Same with my 05 tandem axle one.

I certainly would recommend surge vs electric if you do have to install any.

You are all right.I talked to a dealer near me and he responded the same.A small trailer and boat shouldn't require brakes but the trailer is marked GVWR 3400 lbs.Since the trailer is in fantastic shape i am going to keep it and just tow it like most other people in the state without inspection.I have been reading where most folks don't even know they need inspected over 3000 lbs.Don't really have the cash right now to install $1000 in brakes and labor.

Re: Trailer brakes on 181 trailer... (mha)

Have been looking into the rating plate being wrong. The boat was made in MT HOME and sent to a dealer in CA.Probably some BS took place in the 14 years it has been around and since the trailer appears to have been very recently painted who knows.Since DRI-DOC is out of biz,i'll have to research it.

Would it work if you went to a certified scale and got a weight slip saying it was under 2500lbs and just carry that around as justification for not being heavy enough to have to be inspected?
