Refueling Problem 1997 campion 202

Hi im having a problem filling the boat with gas i just got this boat about 6 mounts ago and every time i go to fill it gas shoots out of the filler neck all over the side of the boat and the carpet at first then it will stop and fill up the rest of the way fine it just happens for a few seconds anyone have any quick fix ideas for this prob it kills me because i know its not good for the gellcoat or the carpet

My guess is your vent line is obstructed by something, maybe water. Make sure there isn't a low spot in them that could trap moisture or gas.

My 97 202 has done it since it was new. You have to be ready for it.

Lately I've had to grab a bunch of the towels they have hanging by the pumps. Wrap about 20 of those around the pump nozzle while filling to try to minimize gas shooting out everywhere

pump slowly at first. My 1990 176 does the same thing. You prolly have gas trapped in the vent hose due to a sagging point in the hose.

Is this for your aux tank? Or the main?

My '97 186 did it as well. My 2006 198 does it sometimes, but if I turn the gas nozzle up (rotate it 180 degrees) it seems to help.

The vent is 99.99% the culprit always...find the restriction and you fix it forever.

For sure it's the vent a friend of mine had the same problem and left the hose clamp off the vent hose at tank and pulled it off when he fueled up then put hose back on until he fixed it. Vent line had a low spot in it you could remove it from the tank and blow on hose and gas would come out the vent.
