I camp and fish there. Great lake, it's in Dinwiddie County. I recommend Whippernock Marina to launch from. Great people, gas, nice ramp, etc.

The north end of the lake has a large shallow flat. If you don't have a map chip you won't know it. Is 1 ft. and less....be careful.

I went there for a few hours this morning. I only caught 1 small bass and a catfish. That's better than I ususally do on that lake. I still haven't figured that lake out.

I usually don't go past the creek that goes into Whippernock. I mostly fish the main lake. There's lots of ledges and points with nothing on them. The docks seem to only hold baby bass. Maybe I need to explore the northern end.

I live close to it too and though we've had more outings with bad luck than not, we still go because it's convenient. And I think I'm less likely to damage my boat in there than on the James...

Where do most tourneys launch from on Chesdin? What do they get for a ramp fee at Whippernock? Last fall Seven Springs was getting $7, on a whim I went by there yesterday to see how busy it was (=madhouse) and they are now getting $10. Is that seasonal, weekends, or permanent at $10?

ya, what he said. and also, navigating up there. I never realized it was accessible until one time we were in the channel that leads to the swamp in a canoe and got buzzed but a bass boat heading from the swamp back down lake.

Chesdin is a Great Lake if you are willing to put the time in out there. I am still learning it as its my first year out there so I don't have any great tips or spots yet. The swamp is definitely accessible but I would either follow someone up your first time or have someone show you on your boat. There are a lot of big bags caught deep just have to put the time in. The spring is a great time out there.

many stumps and small ditches in the swamp. for me its good when they move up to spawn after that im fishing deep banks and channel swings. never really set the world on fire at chesdin but have caught many nice fish. spring before last my dad and I fished there in march and had 5 fish that went 23lbs. by far the best we have done there. fish early and late to avoid the pleasure boaters!!
