    motor connection to lower unit?

How does the lower unit drive shaft connect to the motor? Is the crankshaft splined or is there some connecting piece between them? Specifically on a johnson 115.

Crank is splined and the drive shaft just slides in and out. Provided it hasn't rusted in, the it might not want to slide out.

The splines of the drive shaft have to line up with the female side of the crankshaft on the motor. You may need to rotate the drive shaft or bump the starter on the motor.

Since 1992 there is an upper and lower driveshaft that are splined together below the water pump and gearcase seals. There is a spring-clip retainer that prevents the shafts from coming apart. A special factory tool is used if the upper driveshaft has to be removed.
