    Different Plug Indexing Question

Once a plug has been put in and torqued and the washer crushed, does it need to be replaced if it is removed?

The reason for the question is this:

I just bought a boat with a fresh overhauled 2000 RAM FICHT 150. I wanted to check the index, but was leery to remove the plugs as I had been under the impression that once the crush washer on the plug was crushed, I couldn't necessarily follow the indexing procedure because the amount of turns allowed used in the procedure assumes new plugs. Is this correct?

I guess I can either assume the shop that overhauled the motor (it was an Evinrude Master Tech) indexed the plugs, mark and pull one and see if it was indexed, or suck it up and buy a set and be sure they were indexed. All optins have plusses or minuses.

Woudl it be reasonable to assume that a fresh overhaul would have properly indexed plugs? Is it standard procedure/common knowledge for a mechanic to do this?

You can reuse it. If you couldn't, there are way to many plugs people would be throwing away. One time, it took me 12 plugs to get one that would work. Funny thing is the those plugs worked fine in my other motor.

there should be marks on the white ceramic part of the plug if they are indexed.

    Darn good point! I'll check.

Re: Different Plug Indexing Question (Stein)

I pulled, re-gapped and reinstalled the plugs on my Fichts and DI's all the time. Usually at the 80-100 hour mark. Would replace them at the 150ish hour mark.

    Never had a problem.
