Friend of mine is looking at a 196 for sale. I've never been in one, can someone tell me what the difference is between it and a 198, which I am familiar with. The boat has a 200 Yam, what is it rated for?

I have a 196... it is rated for 200hp. Runs about 68-70 on a light load.

The main difference (which is slight) is the hp rating. To make the 198 meet 225 rating, they widened the gunwales and lengthened the boat by 2 inches. The interiors are about identical. The 196 is an excellent rig!
I don't think the 196 cx models are the wide beams are they? I know they aren't as big as the 198, but I thought they were more like a 191?
They are indeed the wide bodies. The inner measurements are identical...the difference is in the gunwale width, not the deck width. Both have 37sq ft front decks!
The 191s are 90" beams and narrow significantly quicker towards the bow than do the 196 and 198s.
Can't tell the difference between a 196 and a 198 unless you have a tape measure. Same boat just diff HP rating and what Lea said.
