    Motor/Boat Year Discrepancy

How often do boats come with different year motor than the boat itself? I have a 1991 Ranger and found out when I went to put hydraulic steering on that my Johnson 150 is a 1990 motor. How regular a practice is this?

Unless your package was put together at the dealer, where anything is possible depending on what the dealer wanted to do, your situation happens many times around the model year changeover.

Next years model production often starts in June or July for many manufacturers and because the motors are bought from a separate manufacturer, the year changes don't exactly coincide.

If you look at your boat serial number, you will see that it ends with a letter and three numbers. The letter represents the month of the year that the boat was built. The last two digits represent the year.

The letter code is "A" through "L" representing January through December. I'd bet that your boat has a "F" or "G" code.

Thanks a lot. You are correct, it does end in "G." What did you say three numbers on the end mean?

This is why most other outboard OEM's have done away with model years. Boat company purchase a large number of outboards. Its not uncommon to find a engine that is 3 to 4 years older then the boat. When you do everything by serial number you can get away with that.

Of the three digits following the letter, the last two represent the year. Yours should be "01" if it is, in fact, a 1991 boat.
