It was a beautiful day here north of the border. About 60 degrees and clear with just a light breeze. (nice for the fall up here) I decided to get the boat wet and fish for a couple hours after work. I started out with a River 2 Sea Bully Wa frog and forgot how easily this "heavy" frog casted. Right into a tree about 15 feet above the water. No problem.. I throw it on 50lb braid. Snap!!! Okay $8 mistake. I decide to throw a spinnerbait. I see a small log sticking out of the water about 120ft away. I can get this 3/4 oz spinner that far...Snap!!! I forgot I left a birdsnest in that reel last time I fished 2 weeks ago. Another $8 mistake. I fish for about 1.5 hrs and don't get a sniff...until I finally get bit on a Venom Dream Craw with a 3/4 oz Gambler Florida weight. I wasn't sharp and missed the fish. At least I learned the fish were holding in isolated patches of lily pads. I pitch to another set of pads and feel the tell tale "something feels different". I awkwardly set the hook like I have never fished before and lose a 3 pounder when I try to lift it into the boat. Shake it off...I have been off for two weeks. I pitch out again and feel the bait get picked up. This time I am razor sharp and bury my hook deep into a northern pikes mouth. The only problem is, that was the last time I saw THAT bait. What's a few more dollars? I had just purchased a new St. Croix Legend Tournament Pitchin rod and I decided to relieve my frustrations by rigging it up. I took the BPS Rick Clunn series reel off of my spinnerbait rod and put it on the new one. After stripping off all of the old line, I put on fresh 20lb mono. (I couldn't find my flouro) I make my first pitch and have to adjust my reel for it's new duty. I open the side plate and the spool comes loose and birdsnests around the shaft. Now I can't put the spool back in or take it out.By this time I am fuming. I put the rod away to deal with later and pick up my other pitchin rod again. First cast.. a fish picks it up and I swing and miss. Okay... that's enough for one night. As I am putting all my gear away, I realize it is a perfect time and conditions for some high speed runs. I remove my pro pole from up front and stow it. My hands are so cold I can't get the rear seat out.
I still figure I will make an attempt at some good numbers. Well the conditions were perfect and I saw 73.0 mph on the gps right before I ran out of straight water. My best numbers yet! At least the night wasn't a total failure. Sorry for the long post, I was frustrated and needed to vent!
