I need some new steering cables for my 95 186. Im not sure how to measure them, do I measure to the connecting nut at the end of the black cover or all the way the end of the rods (not sure of the terminology) I dont want to pull them out until i get new ones in hand if i dont have to. The boat has a yamaha prov 150 with a 6" jack plate, the steering wheel says TELEFLEX ANTI FEED BACK.
crawl under the dash/helm and look about (within) 2 feet back of the rack on the cable itself for a part number printed onto the cable

You could save yourself the cost of the cables and other stuff if you just bought that fancy new red one up at Clearwater Marine.
I would sacrifice my time and ride with you, just so you wouldn't get lost on the huge front deck,
