What are the disadvantages if any of removing the hook in a hull ? I have a 2001 196 champion that is slow and I am wondering if removing some or all of the hook will help increase top end speed .

What did you find out your engine?
I would be very hesitant to do anything to the hull before I exhausted all options first. That would be the very last thing I would do if I even did it.
Send you prop to Mark and have him work it.
WHAT H.P IS YOUR 200 H.O. ? I SHOULD BE SPINNING THE 26 TEMPEST ALOT MORE THAN 5300 WITH 225 H.P. A LOCAL PROP SHOP CHECKED IT AND PUT 1 BLADE BACK IN PITCH, I COULDNT TELL ANY DIFFERENCE.

Uhhhh...let me guess on this one.![]()

Highly unlikely you have any hook in your hull. If you do, it would be minimal. As Jack suggested, don't mess with the hull on that boat....
You need to try different props and engine heights. The 26 Tempest plus props are notorious for being inconsistant out of the box. I had to try 3 before I got a good one. Another suggestion is to send your prop to Mark Croxton or Robbie Pattterson. Both do miracles with props.

I know you like to type in caps, but please turn em off...it is considered shouting....![]()
Lea I think he is talking about the built in hook in the hull (very back) that is supposed to be there to help handling and such. But as said before, don't mess with it because it is there for a reason.
Ditch the 26 prop. Too much prop for that engine. Find a 25 either yammy (don't know anything about these) or a tempest. 5300 is not nearly enough RPMS. Run that 25 and if it needs to be worked because you spin too much RPMs then send it off to get it worked.
My 200 HO is putting out a shade over 200 HP, 215-220 HP. Thats what I have been told anyway. I could probably tweak my set up some and maybe even run a 26 P prop and definately hit the 70 MPH mark but I would not be turning the RPM'a that the HO likes.
It was set up by C&O marine so I figure it's as good as it's probably going to get.![]()

I'll tell you exactly what will happen...
Holeshot will turn to crap.
Handling will be way worse, instead of the champ carving turns, it becomes just another sliding sled bass hull.
You'll have to learn to drive a chine walking beast.
You'll pick up a couple mph.
Your decision.

THANKS FOR THE INFO ! I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF GETTING THE PROP WORKED HELPS.
I wouldn't touch the hull either. The 01-04 196's with that 200H.O. ran very well. I had an 04 that would just touch 70MPH. Definitely look at prop, and set-up first.

I saw in another thread, that your motor is a 2.6L, and also comments that it might not be the correct motor to get more speed on your boat....Did you get any more info about it from Hydrotech..?
65 is not bad!!!

Thats actually very true. Those are great speeds for a small block.
