    Champ 184 motor selection

Hey guys, I know that champ did use the evinrude xp200 on the 20ft boat, but I am putting together a 1986 184 project, i have a xp200 that I can use to power it, but is there any good reason (besides rated at 175hp.... my USCG plate is missing.. so how would I know) that I should steer clear of that motor, and rig up something that would have come originally? I really do like the 200 looper, and am hoping that it will kick ass on this boat... Please let me know your opinions on this... And NO I won't trade my 200 for your 9.9 just because you say it will run better!!!

Re: Champ 184 motor selection (callyer)

Oh, by the way the XP has a nose cone, and I will be most likely running a 6" manual jack plate. any set up tips would also be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Good running motor on that hull, get rid of the nose cone if you can though, it'll slow you down.

Where should I start the motor height when fine tuning?.. I heard about 3.5" below pad.. is this the same with the jack plate? Also, just wondering, I am sure there is good reason, but why would a nose cone slow you down? I am asking because i looks damn near impossible to remove) Theoretically, wouldn't a longer, sleaker cone be less drag in the water??? also, what do you think about prop selection.. here is the prop I have on it now. there is a stamp on it in the picture...

Thanks, your time and input are appreciated!

In theory the longer pointier nose cone "should" go faster, in reality it doesn't.

The only benifit of the cone is when you start exceeding the blow out speed, usually around 80, then the longer cone helps prevent that.

So......... what you're saying is .. .I am not goin' 80?.. what kind of speeds turning what props can I expect from this thing (with XP200).. my current rig is an unstable.. but fast Tunnel Vee hull... sometimes I don't even have to touch the water! But I am giving that up so that I don't Launch 20ft into the air evertime I hit a jetski wake.... I think it is a fair trade.. a little top end.. for my life?

I have the exact same set-up...You will see about 65 ish running a 25p three blade..I haven't really worked on set-up...but I'm at 3.5 below starts to chine @ 64mph...Get hydrolic steering if you can torque steer is pretty strong on mine without it..Could be a set up issue though...My 87 XP looper hasn't let me down...Oh yeah I have a nose cone too...email me @ sker13@sbcglobal.net if you want more info!

Thank 13!.. that's what i was hoping for... 65 is plenty fast for me at this point in my life... what RPMs are you turning at that speed?

    Thanks,

Re: Champ 184 motor selection (callyer)

5600-5800 depending on load..Right now I am swinging a raker prop..I have a tempest 25 to try... got the hub kit but never put it on...I have another boat that I use as my primary but could not let go of my old champ...I am going to get her dialed in this year...she sat idle for a while with a blown powerhead...rebuilt the carbs..new powerhead...new electronics..new bilge and livewell pumps..new candy blue on top cap...new seats and carpet...ready to go now...That motor burns alot of fuel/oil...20 or so gallons an hour @ Wot...I only have one 22 or 24 gallon tank so range is an issue on big lakes...Wish I had hydrolic steering...I still might spring for it...Other than that it's great...Sterling

p.s. Pat Goff will be a big help to you on this board!! IF he responds to your post about older champs...listen he knows alot more than me!

Re: Champ 184 motor selection (sker13)

Hey guys, I have the motor/ jackplate installed, and am routing/ installing the new no feedback dual cable steering, one problem though, the two holes provided for the steering (i think) are coming out of the side (interior) of the splash well, and the angle will not allow me to route them through the holes and into the steering on the motor, should i drill new holes at the back side of the top cap/ re-route them though the main opeinging for the motor cables/ tubes, or what? Here is a link to the picture.

Re: Champ 184 motor selection (ToledoBendRanger)

yup.. was kinda difficult.. I didn't have the helm hooked up, so I had some extra to play with, and i would work with the main cable opening on top, but not the lower cable holes, I think I am going to add an additional two holes on the back grey area in the picuture and put some of those chrome vent covers over them, not only will that give me a "straighter shot" to the motor, I think it will look better as well. I hate to drill more holes in my boat, but I want it to be right, and I don't want to have to pull the motor/ jackplate every time I want to clean the steering cables/ shafts.
