wanting to know if i need a jack-plate

Hello, i just bought a 89, 184 champion. 1989 GT175 Johnson. 24'pitch. It doesn't have a plate on it. The guy i bought it from said it was running 67-68mph on gps. I took it out for the first time yesturday and the speedometer said around 62mph. The motor seemed to be running like crap after a while though. Just wondering if i needed a jack-plate or not. Seems like everybody but me has one. thanks for any info...........

Pat Goff will be along to advise...but you may want to look down thru the threads in the forum to see what he says when others have asked. pmgoffjr....our really knowledgeable guy on older Champs. You probably need a 6" rapidjack with Champ offset, but he knows better than anyone...

Do you have water pressure gauge? If not, please get one installed!!!!!

Thought you said you had dropped off at mechanic...mud daubers, etc..... You have to get that motor running good before trying to dial her in!

thanks, i'll look for some more forums about this. No, i dont have a water pressure gauge. Its at the mechanics right now, i'll see if he can add a gauge. Yes, i realize i need to get it running good before i think about anything else. Just wondering for the future i guess. thanks for the info though.

You dont "need" a jackplate, but your boat will run better with one. Dont get them mud-daubers mad, they will ruin your day in a hurry.

thats the first thing the mechanic said. My luck, im sure its prob. going to cost me a motor or overhaul. There goes my sweet deal i thought i got on the boat. As far as the jack plate goes, how does it actually help out. Im new to the outboards, i had a inboard/outboard for years. Broke my neck skiing, decided to stick with fishing and not listen to my wife. thanks for the info by the way
