    Power Pack, Kill Switch, and Compression Check

    I have a 1992Evinrude 225 ( E225TXNR). I recently replaced the Power Pack with an OEM part, 0586662 (CD6AL/67).

    Regarding the kill switch, the factory service manual says (Pg 3-13):

    "The key switch and emergency stop switch are connected to the power pack through the engine wiring harness. When activated, these switches direct the power pack output to ground, stopping the ignition system."

    Does this mean if the kill switch lanyard is removed, the engine will not start due to absence of ignition spark?

    Is this a good way to suppress engine starting when making a compression check?

    Not always, on newer boats, this may not work. Always remove the spark plug wires from the plugs, let the spark jump to the block or use a sparky to route the spark from the plugs. You can fit the spark plug leads over the head bolts( if they are in good shape) to let the spark go to ground while running compression. You may however, start the engine, remove the safety lanyard, after the engine stops, try to restart without the lanyard, if it does'nt restart, you should be good. Be careful, the fuel expelled from the engine can sometimes ignite, do only one cylinder at a time,leave the other plugs in the engine. If you remove more than one plug at a time, you may get the blowtorch affect, this really sucks!

    How about the action which results with the power pack and engine I specified?

    Will this particular engine suppress spark on starting if the safety lanyard has been pulled?

    Thanks for the reply.

    If the spark is suppressed on starting by pulling the safety lanyard,
    it seems like that would be a good way to prevent sparking during
    a compression test.

    Is there any problem in doing a compression test that way, that is,
    by pulling the safety lanyard and then cranking the engine with the
    starter?
