    Blown motor insurance claim

Well the other day I was fishing and ran through some hydrila and blew my motor because the water pump clogged up. Do yall think I can claim this on insurance? Hope so because I can't afford a rebuild. I have my boat insured for 20k. Oh and it's progressive.

If you have a policy for your boat it should cover just about anything. It would probably be worth filing a claim to see.

do you have the boat insured as an endorsement to your homeowner's policy or is it a separate policy? either way unless its just a liability only policy, it will probably cover it. I'm not 100 percent sure. May be worth talking to your agent or reading your policy yourself before filing a claim. No sense in risking a rate increase if they aren't going to cover the loss.

Also i would probably mention the fact that the hydrilla in the water caused the motor to blow so they wont think it was purely mechanical failure. Your policy may cover if you "collide" with the hydrilla, causing the water pump to clog vs just running down the lake and the motor blows up. The fact that the hydrilla caused the motor to fail would be similar to hitting a stump and tearing the foot off i would think.

You can try and you will get resistance. I made a claim od failure due to hitting stump and having part of that stump lodge in the thermostat. That stat bever allowed that bank od cylindrs to warm thus causing cold seizure. I fought 6 months and they ended paying 1/2 out of the "goodness of their heart". It was a long grueling battle. Be sure to track every conversation in a detailed log. You will need it.

It's a separate policy. I'll get with them in the morning.

I wouldn't tell them there was any hydrilla visible above the surface...make it sound like you hit an underwater obstacle that you could not have seen.....
based on what I've read on fishing forums, some people have good luck with progressive and some hate them....my guess is they are gonna try to deny the claim but be persistent if they are and mention that you will take this to court if you have to....and might also mention you have a good friend who is an attorney who is willing to help you....insurance companies do not like to tangle with attorneys especially on small claims in small towns........

p.s. your over heat alarm should have gone off and prevented you from blowing the engine...

I disagree, you wont be fast enough if running pretty good. I had a buddy suck up a plastic bag running 70+ and before he sat the boat down it was toast. (alarm went off almost instantly) He saw the water pressure drop and immediately lifted to come off plane. His insurance did cover it after some time arguing the case though . Insurance company may want the mechanics opinion when it gets torn apart.

Good luck with that. You better have a melted impeller, shred gaskets etc or no chance IMO.

Make sure you have a notebook and write everything down when you talk to you insurance company. Document what time it is, who you talked to, what they said, etc. They won't want to pay the first time around but be persistent.

It never hurts to put the claim in. All policies have what is covered and was is not covered in black and white. There is always a grey area that should benefit the insured. Mechanical failure is not a covered loss in a boat policy. So when filing a claim that appears to be mechanical failure, your best option is to support the failure as a result of such things as impact, plastic bag blocking the intake, grass blocking the intake, sand. The insurance company will refer to wear and tear as there out. Find a mechanic that will work with you on the diagnosis so that you can support your claim with anything that will NOT show mechanical or wear and tear damage.

Had the same type of thing happen about 6 or 7 years ago.. They covered it minus my deductible. Had to have the shop pull it apart first but basically they said they had no way to prove or dis prove I hit something.

I use ACE boat insurance they have always be GREAT. Had a friend with another company and they would not even look at it. So it depends a lot on the company you have also. Good Luck and it is ALWAYS a good idea to turn it in to insurance, you pay for it for a reason.

Let us know how it turns out.

the mechanic will likely be the key. The progressive guys in or area are fairly sharp and you want bs them. Not saying you are . Trey and John both reasonable but they have one that is hard to deal with. Good Luck

I had an Evinrude 175 on the back of my boat, I hit a cypress stump at just above idle. For some reason it kicked a rod out the side of the block. I just bought a different engine. Sure seems to me the engine computer should have reduced yours to idle before it cooked, mine always did.

remember the #1 rule when dealing with insurance adjustors....their job is to deny a claim or settle it as cheap as they can....and...the insurance company is paying their salary.....

I did something similar on the Potomac, sucked up a good amount of muck and seized the water pump. Engine alarmed and blew before I could even get off plane. Insurance paid to have it taken apart, saw it was full of mud, and gave me the motor's worth minus deductible. This was through Allstate...
