96 185 DC-storage under bench seat?

Just bought a 96 185 DC. The bench seat is one piece. It is hinged towards the front of the seat (towards the bow) and thus lifts toward the bow as well. However upon lifting the bench seat there is only a flat, carpeted surface. Is it possible to cutout an area on this carpeted surface and create storage under the bench seat? Any idea if the surface is a wood or fiberglass?

I'm not sure about this, but I'd be willing to bet it's fiberglass over wood. The space under it is probably filled with floatation, or maybe even your gas tank. (Although you probably know where your gas tank is.) I don't think I'd go cutting into it.
