    250 hpdi

I was wondering if anyone has any problem with a 250 staying cranked when it is cold. My 250 will fire right up but if you touch the gas without it being in gear it will just load up and die. If I put it in gear it will go alright. I am having it looked at in the morning. I checked the plugs and they look ok. I have a friend with a 250 and he said his does the same thing.

In neutral, The hpdi only fires on 4 cyl.... In gear it fires on all 6. It may be a tps adjustment, But I'm not sure. I would ask on the yamaha forum.

There is a guy in my area that has a 250 HPDI on a Z21 that had a similar problem although his would not stay running at all ; that turned out to be a faulty sqeeze ball check valve. -- mike

Depends on what you mean by 'touch the gas'. If you're mashing it down to try and rev it up, it will do this. As was said, the HPDI only fires on four cylinders in neutral. I could ease down on the throttle of my 250 and it would spit and sputter, but I knew what it was doing. I never tried to just press down and rev it up. No need to.

    Re: 250 hpdi (1niceStratos)

Outboards have forced induction water cooling via the nose cone when it is under way, i.e. your water pressure changes at differnt speeds and motor heights. When you are sitting still it gets minimal pressure from the water pump. When it is in neutral and on 4cyls it is a safeguard to not allow you to do something stupid like rev it up. Reving it up causes the motor to heat up and wear and tear beyond it's norm..... Thank Yamaha for this.

Preacher, like the other guts said it only fires on 4 cyl's until it gets warmed up then you'll be fine! next time you're out if your by yourself back it in get on the t/m and park the truck come back and you'll see what I'm talking about. Mine did the very same thing when it get's warm it will idle down and when you engage forward then you've got all 6 cyl's.

Cold or Warm.....When in neutral the HPDI will always fire in 4-cyl mode.

Danny, you have to let the Yammie warm up. Yamaha recommends that you let the idle for 3 mins. to warm up.

    Re: 250 hpdi (preacher)

I took the 250 to Grammer Marine and they laid hands on it. He adjusted the throttle linkage. It was off so the motor idled a little slow. I took it to the river yesterday and it seems to be doing Great. The computer flag-ed it when he turned the key on. The factory people said that they can move during brake in. The motor ran strong yesterday. "Ain't God Good"
