    TNT

Finally got a chance to run wot after having raker fixed. Same cooling lake as before .Going along fine 5600rpm/ 52 mph, and decided to stop and fish awile. Decided to change locations, started up motor tried to trim down a bit and nothing. Stopped engine and tried to trim engine and just heard clicks from the relays. Tried bow and stern controlls also and same thing. 1983 johnson 140 tnt. ser.#j140tlcte. Motor will only stay in full trim position. Made it out of the lake o.k.,and had to use manual bleed to raise motor up to go home. Anybody out there have any ideas what's going on?

    Re: TNT (Rangerwill)

Swap the relays around and see if it goes down now, but not up. You may just have a bad relay.

    Re: TNT (ProcraftMike)

That's not the best test as both relays are used for up and down operation. If you can hear both relays clicking when you try to raise or lower the engine then your problem is not with the wiring of the trim switches or the primary ccts of the trim.

You can use a 12 volt battery to test the trim motor. Connect it across the leads for the trim motor. You should be able to run the motor in both directions by reversing the polarity of the battery to motor connection. If the motor works then replace BOTH relays.

If you cannot hear the relays clicking then you have a problem in the wiring from the trin switches to the relays...look for frayed or broken wires.

    Re: TNT (1993392)

Did the relay swap and found corrosion around one terminal on both of the relays. Same clicking but no motor movement. disconnected the trim wiring and jumped with wire from battery motor would go up, and reversed wires and motor would go down. Going to replace relays and will report results in a couple of days. thanks for all the help.

Get a can of non-conductive grease to put on the terminals of the new relays.

Been calling and looking for replacement relays. Relays currently in question are Bosch# 0 332 204 157. 12v 20/30A. Question is are these the correct relays to begin with. Also what amp. should the fuse be at the relay box.
