    random bay thoughts

i ran from sass to flats last year during the early morn calm , drop trolling motor and begin casting and think , man that wind is beginning blow pretty good . within 20 min im bouncing in 1 footers and decide to go back to sass for calmer waters . mother freaker if they werent 4 footers ( maybe 3) there werent any at all . i was strapping my life vest tight and planning my swim route . it took me over 30 minutes but i made it back to the sass . lesson learned .

Coming across Turkey Point can be deceiving on a calm day.

No question.....the mouth of the Sass up to Turkey Pt especially can build major swells/waves with opposing winds and tide.....gain

What I hate is when the wind & tide are going in the same direction and your trying to drive a boat in the same direction.

Oh yeah nothing worse then trying to get into the Sass when the wind is blowing out of the northwest and the tide is going out !!

The upper bay can get brutal at times. The upper bay triangle from the mouth of the Sass, up into the Elk, across Turkey point and down past the mouth of the Susky can get bad on just 10 - 15!

I had one really bad situation in around '98 or '99 when I had serious thoughts of ditching the boat. My partner and I were running from Dundee to the Susquehanna and got caught in a damn squall as we passed the mouth of Bush River heading north. My old ProCraft was more of a submarine than a bass boat that day. Scary chit and i never been so wet in my life.

few years ago we were fishing a wednesday night 3fer out of middle river . we were in my friends old battle tank 201 stratos when storms cranked up . we were down in dundee when hell broke loose . the biggest waves i ever saw were rolling out of the mouth of middle river . there were boats that went north and i still cant figure how they made it back in that night . good times !

On top of mother natures chop and waves, I've always found the Elk/Turkey Point/Sassmouth area to have an especially high concentration of barge and pleasure boat rollers too. Add those into an already tricky area, and it can make for some wet, rough, and scary bass boat driving.

Don't forget the 1000 crab pots when the crabs run that far North, add it all together and it can be scary to say the least

A buddy and I ran from Mariner Point to the Northeast this Sunday in the morning and it was not fun. We started to head back and it was even worse. Stupid SW wind had white caps in the Northeast. We had a friend drive the truck and trailer to HDG and went to lunch.
