40 gallon gas tank check valve

I have a fish and ski boat with a 40 gallon gas tank built in.There is a barbed nipple with a checkvalve inside it on the outside of the gas tank, the gas hose connects to this then runs to the outboard johnson v6.The question is do i need this checkvalve nipple or could I replace it with one without a check valve?
