Lip

Does the Pro Sport or Bass Sport have the lip like the 2003? I understand that the 2003 has the lip to allow for smaller horsepower and slower planing sleed. Is the lip necessary for a 225 Pro Max? I have a hard time keeping the bow up at speeds of about 70. Can sanding a little off the lip help or do I have the wrong prop? I run a Powertech 4 blade.

leave your pad alone, I know some guys mess with it, but trust me Darris Allison knows a little about design and what works and what don't. You should have no trouble with lift if your setup and prop are correct.

Yes, it does have a lip but its more subtle than that of the 20' models.

Give Todd a call at Hydromotive, he knows Allisons and what they need prop wise.

A 26p Trophy is the prop for the 21's with a 225 pm.
If you have a Pro you may need more set back or move one of the T/M batteries to the rear center compartment since the engine is lighter. If you have a ProSport either your prop isn't working or you don't have your engine height correct.
I have not seen Trophy's breaking on the 21's with 2.5L engines.

You should only have to redistribute the weight to achieve what you're in search of. They are very weight sensitive boas. Also might have to lower your propshaft. I run mine at 3/4" below the pad. I do sacrifice some on the topend but it's well worth it b/c I run LOADED all the time and it also helps in the rough stuff. I'm running a powertech 4 blade. Hope this helps.

I might not have been clear in my original post. I currently have a 2003. I'm wanting a Bass Sport. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Re: Lip (BARRY J)

I never had any lack of bow lift on my 03. My lip was stock as far as I could tell (I wasn't the original owner though).

What prop and setback are you running?

Barry, I understood your question and I think I answered accordingly. The BasSport does have a lip but its not as pronounced as your current model.

Re: Lip (BARRY J)

The powertech prop is most likely your culprit. Not many Allison onwers run the PT 4 blades woithout a lot of work to them. A Trophy is your ticket for a 4 blade wheel on yer rig,, just like others have mentioned. The lip debate is a long ongoing one, but the bottom line is on the stock 225PM on the XB-03 , leave the lip alone,-- unless it has already been messed with,,then you may want to have someone reputable, have a look at it.

Weight distribution is key one these hulls, listen to some good advise above.

Trophy >

I never could get a trophy to run on my 03. The steering torque was horrible.....as in DANGEROUS.

Re: Lip (RobShaw1)

Just my opinion, but by the time you buy a trophy, then spend more $$$ to have it modified.....you coulda just bought a better prop in the first place. I'd put my hydromotive up against a trophy in holeshot, acceleration, and top end. The hydromotive just did everything better than the trophy.

I ran 3 different 27" trophies on my 03 and all of them were undriveable. As in couldn't turn left over 50 mph. I'll never own another trophy, unless it is on the end of a rope being used as an anchor.

Re: Lip (nealxb2003)

I never ran any 27 pitch Trophy props but I did run several 26 and 25 pitch ones and they all ran great. A 26 Trophy on my XB2003 with 6850 limiter hit right on 87 mph.......and no steering torque. I have a feeling though Neal, the 27 Trophy is a different "animal".

Re: Lip (nealxb2003)

Neal,
A stock out of the box Trophy works great on an XB-2003 with the proper lower unit mods. and set up. Mercury did have a run of Trophy's a few years back that were ground improperly accross the top of the cup that didn't work worth a d*** on any boat. I wouldn't rule them out and am certainly not cutting Thom & Todd at Hydromotive by any means.

Re: Lip (RobShaw1)

Barry J --- I shoulda asked the question, is yer Powertech a thru hub or over hub prop?

I had a PT wheel once before, a thru hub prop, it was not a good choice on my rig but for 150 bucks brand new in the box, well worth the attempt. I do not know if they offer an over the hub exhaust model in 4 blades.

Back to the Trophy wheel,,, I have not owned a 27" or 28" Trophy. My old prop guy was second to none on those Trophy's. He had told me the 27 could be made to a nice wheel with a lot of work and that the 28 was a horse of a different color, different design pretty much.
I suggested the Trophy cuz Barry was talking about a 4 blade PT that I assumed was over hub wheel. A cheap alternative prop is a good used trophy in my opinion. There are several people that do the Darris mods to the Trophies and they run out fine, handle great and last. I know a lot of people bad mouth them because they have had or heard of blades getting thrown. Some people don’t want to admit that they were surfacing the Trophy sorta high when they broke. The Trophies in stock form are not "perfect", sometimes 3 out of 4 blades are not all symmetrical in rake nor pitch. In my opinion that's why they'll chunk a blade when surfaced stock. Some are closer in stock form than others. Once tuned up , all blades equal, they'll surface with good duration and handle like a dream. Ask Darris his opinion on a Trophy....

My bote fund is usually sorta low,, so I tend to follow suit pretty much. I have bought used Trophies for 200 bucks, had them 'tuned ' up fer another 200 bucks or less and get a fine wheel outta the deal. I know nothing about Hydromotive, other than all the good feedback from others that I have read. I was not trying to start a brand name pizzin match. There's several 4 blade wheel out there that perform amazingly well.

9 times outta 10, you'll see a 3 blade over hub on my rigs. But I do have a baddzz trophy or two....

The trophies I ran were stock and that was before my lower unit was modified.......so that may have had something to do with it. I still won't pump that much into a mercury prop after that experience, but to each his own.

Re: (nealxb2003)

Thanks for all the info, guys. I have a 225 Super Magnum with a short shaft and Sportsmaster lower unit. I have an hydraulic jackplate mounted to an Alliosn plate with fifteen inches fo setback. I usually run the prop about one half inch below the pad. The Powertech prop is a copy of a Trophy. The only difference is that the Powertech has a flare at the end of the barrel and the Trophy does not. My best speed with this setup is 90. That was no trol motor and everything out of the boat, except for lead shot for balance. With a fishing load last week, it ran 87.5 at 7200 rpm.
