    Lower unit rebuild

    I'm think about tring to rebuild my lower unit 97 evinrude 175 E175GLEUE, went out last night. Anyone taken this on? I'm not a gear head, but I have done some mechanical work. Ant advice?

    Special tools are required to shim it correctly. My advice is to buy a good used lower.

    If possible to rebuild your unit, It's usually cheaper to do this. However, you mentioned it's a 97. This raises a few factors that need to be considered. Look very closely at the pinion bearing area, is the bearing still tight in it's bore? The '92-'99 housings were bad to allow this area to become enlarged, allowing the bearing to move around a bit. When this happens, your pinion gear to forward gear alignment is no longer there, destroying the gearset. Also look for any vertical cracks in this same area. These housings were known as retainer ring housings, meaning the Pinion bearing was secured at the top by a wire ring, instead of the screw on the right side of the case. Hope this helps.

    Hey witchdoctor, Glad to hear from you, Also glad to know your unit is still going! That was used as I recall, are you Irish by any chance?

    Great!!! Iv'e just received 3 cases of Royal Purple 75/90 for the L.U.'s if anybody wants to try some. Very good stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
