Special tools are required to shim it correctly. My advice is to buy a good used lower.
If possible to rebuild your unit, It's usually cheaper to do this. However, you mentioned it's a 97. This raises a few factors that need to be considered. Look very closely at the pinion bearing area, is the bearing still tight in it's bore? The '92-'99 housings were bad to allow this area to become enlarged, allowing the bearing to move around a bit. When this happens, your pinion gear to forward gear alignment is no longer there, destroying the gearset. Also look for any vertical cracks in this same area. These housings were known as retainer ring housings, meaning the Pinion bearing was secured at the top by a wire ring, instead of the screw on the right side of the case. Hope this helps.![]()
Glad ya finally made it on here Eddie! My unit that I got from ya is still doin great!![]()
