setting the hook while using plastics

I have a question that you guys may think is silly, but here goes... When im pitching plastics and my line takes off to one side, I sometimes freeze trying to think of the best hookset direction. Do you guys set the hook in the direction the line is moving, exactly the opposite direction, or always straight up in the air? I watched Randall Tharp snell a flipping hook on TV, and show how it cantilevers on the hookset straight up, but I can't decide whether that is the best way to always set, especially since I've never snelled a hook...

When flipping and pitching as soon as that line moves sideways I set the hook straight up. Never had much luck setting from side to side but that's just me

just dont go straight down and you'll be all set! My partner always laughs when I set the hook, because he thinks Im going to come up with just the head. I tell him I'm not leaving anything to chance.
If you are ashamed to stand by your colors, you had better seek another flag.

On the day I die I know where I'm gonna go, me and Jesus got that part worked out. I'll wait at the gate till his face I see, and stand in a long line of sinners like me.

Hands in close to your chest and snap the rod straight up, all in the wrists.

Nothing to think about friend! Just try to turn em inside out...It works great for me and usually results in flying fish sightings!!!

I think more important than anything is making sure you don't have slack in the line when you set the hook, especially when not using braid. If you are using quality equipment (strong/sharp hook, stout rod and good line). Other than that, set it hard and get it in the boat quickly. That's a big reason for the stout equipment.

    Set straight up!
I started with the snell knot on straight shank hooks and saw an increase in my hook ups. Go on youtube and search videos on tying the snell.

    Good luck!

    pretty simple......Speed kills.

power sets are not as effective as rod speed....... when you hear the rod break the sound bearier..... you are starting to do it right.

If you were holding onto a jig walking away from the guy holding a rod, would you be conserned about what direction he was about to set the hook? I just nail 'em.
