blown piston, what to do with motor?

    E115TLCNB
    1982
    Evinrude 115

I lost compression in 1 cyl last weekened and after removing the head have realized that the piston blew a ring, ate the piston and scored the walls, and seems to have cracked the head somewhat. The dome on the head is pitted with little 2mm square pits and gashes and there are lines (cracks?) in it originating from the pits. At this point he motor still ran and idled smoothly, never would know but hte power just was not there. 3 out of 4 have 125 psi compression and 1 is ZERO. So now what should I do. Is it worth rebuilding, can I have one cyl bored out and leave the rest? Or do i need to have them all done. I just wanted it to last a few more months and I was going to sell it. . What is a reasonable cost for having a V4 power head bored .020 over? thanks for the input

A good rebuild from someone reputable with some kind of warranty is going to cost you at least $2000.

If you decide to do it yourself then throw the bad head away and find one on ebay.

Yuo can pretty much figure that if one cylinder went south the others are soon to follow, my advice is to take that $2000 and put it downon a new etec.

something that old is a boat anchor or EBAY material. someone will want the lower unit or they may have another blown one and will want to combine 2 to make 1.

sorry for your misfortune or congratulations! on your new repower??? you decide.

    have a great day

i opted for the rebuild myself, replaced bad piston, all rings brgs etc while inside, honed the cyl wall. all at about a parts cost of 800.00 but mine was an older johnson 140, not the etec.

best of luck, and sorry to hear of your motor prob, keep your chin up.

and as always remember i am not an expert, jsut a broke bass fisherman, lol

thanks for the advice, motor is on the choping block and the parts headed for ebay. I'm looking at a used one to put on the boat and sell as a working package and then going for a newer boat next year. The inside was completely grenaded and by the looks of it the block was already worked over once before. On another note... How do I remove the lower unit from the power head. I removed the shift pin link and that is loose, removed all the bolts on the lower unit to mid section, thats loose and seperated by a 1/8 inch or so but the unit still will not drop. It seems as thought he driveshaft has a retaining clip on it.

    Thanks for the help

    Dan,
You have an IM on your motor, and they don't do .020 anymore (rarely) you need to go to .030 over or re-sleeve.
