Is there a way to determine if you have a bad battery or power cord? Trying to figure which one without having to buy one. Computer operates with just power cord and no battery, but does that mean it will charge the battery.

How old is the computer? My guess would be that it's a bad power adapter and not the battery.
If the battery is totally dead then even with the cord it could have issues with power but that is unlikely. Most likely it is the power cord. If there is a Best Buy near you, take the cord in and ask if they will test it on a computer. Usually the cord is bad, not the battery.
I am near a best buy, I'll take it in, thanks for the help.
BTW, it's about five years old.
My lap top tells me the charge of the battery when I have both battery and power cord on at the same time. If it's not recognizing the battery then it wouldn't show charging.

Life is kinda hard but it's
better than the other options .. er ..option !
The battery on my old laptop wouldn't hold a charge so I took it out and just ran it off the power cord. Had no problems at all.
Didn't want to spent the $$$ on a battery for an old laptop.
Most manufacturers will tell you to replace the battery annually. Most also recommend to exercise them monthly by running on the battery until the low battery alarm goes off. I do neither and my batteries last 2-3 years before I need to replace them. Unfortunately I do need to run on battery from time to time.

I've had the battery out for last month or so, just put it back in and never would show on the bottom of screen that I even had a battery in it. Usually it would show time remaining on current charge. Nothing shows up.As if it has no battery in it.
if it works off the power cord you need to replace the battery.
What Computer? I have a Dell that the battery is good and the power cord is good but the computer will not charge the battery, it is something internal in the computer. I verified this by putting my battery and charger cord on another computer just like mine and they both worked. Yours sounds like the battery if it is not recognizing it. Mine recognizes the battery but says plugged in not charging.

You could take it to Batteries Plus and see how it tests.
Some people are so judgemental. You can tell just by looking at 'em.--Some random meme
