    BPS in Houston

I've spent the last 4 days in Houston for a training class, and I live no where near a bass pro, so I was looking forward to picking up a few things at the local store. I made the trip yesterday and they didn't have any of the things I was looking for. I wanted to put my hands on a duckett casting rod before I ordered one and they don't even carry them, and I wanted a specific color senko, no dice. To hell with that place. I'll stick with tackle warehouse. On a good note, if I wanted an Ugly Sitk they had 100 of em.
If you are ashamed to stand by your colors, you had better seek another flag.

On the day I die I know where I'm gonna go, me and Jesus got that part worked out. I'll wait at the gate till his face I see, and stand in a long line of sinners like me.

    Re: BPS in Houston (catchinweeds)

I spent a few days in Houston a few years ago when my wife attended a training class. I tried to kill some time by visiting some of the local tackle stores. I couldn't find any small independent stores. I drove all the way across town to go to the BPS and it was mostly saltwater stuff...same with the Academy I visited there. The best selection of bass gear was at Gander Mountain and it wasn't any better than the Academy right here in my town. I thought Houston would have some kickass tackle stores but I sure couldn't find them.

+1 on Academy Sports. On a side note I really liked the feel of the Duckett rods, and almost bought one at Academy...but for some reason and the only reason I could not get over that big sticker the put on it saying "Made in China" so I passed

Yeah, I understood that...I just thought there would be a better selection of bass tackle in one of the largest cities in the US. There are a lot of bass lakes down that way.

Only thing different than Walmart and Bass Pro Shops is Walmart has more fish tanks!

Think they might cater to the saltwater boys more than bass fisherman there

I guess they should change the name to "Saltwater Pro Shops" then....

Do you really think that a brick and morter store will carry EVERYTHING that EVERY manufacturer makes????

Yes the stores are a separate entity from the catalog and from the online sales....AND the stores are geared towards the market they are located in.

If they didnt have what you wanted, did you ask someone for help or just assume the place sucks? Now in the OP's case I understood you were just visiting....but for people that live "near" a store, if they are out of stock just ask one of the associates in that department to turbo order it. They will call you when it comes in!

BPS sucks in general. I go only aroung Christmas and my birthday, since that's when I have a butt load of gift cards. The rest of the year it's Tackle Warehouse and Bass Tackle Depot.

Tell everyone to just get you TW and BTD gift cards... I live 5 min from cabelas and I still order online or buy from our local places who carry baits and terminal stuff that relates to our bass fishery.

^^this^^ It's a no win, the store takes care of the people who request the most tackle. If the saltwater crowd lobbies the manager and fishing manager for certain baits, or more baits, they will carry them and they will cater to the segment of the market that supplies the store with the most income. I dunno, I did seminars and tank demos at the Spring Classic event at the BPS in Hampton and tackle was flying outta there. I was amazed how much was being sold along with rods and reels!! So those that want to order online....have at it.......BPS is, from what I have seen, doing pretty good selling at the store level. But I will agree, I am sponsored by Yamamoto and their selection is pretty slim. I just convinced them to carry the 5 inch cut tails!!

Because no store carries the ENTIRE selection (known as assortment) of stuff! AND you wont have to pay for shipping if its shipped to a store....:)

It wouldnt make much sense for a store in Texas to carry musky or walleye baits or a store in Michigan to carry saltwater stuff! (surprisingly, there are occasions that they do!)

I was wondering which store he did go to....I assumed Katy since he said he was near Houston. But isnt there one in Pearland now? I have been to the Katy store many times.

Fishing Tackle Unlimited would probably be a good bet too....they have two locations in Houston (that I remember).
