    computer help with wireless networks

So I am trying to get my desktop computer online and I am failing miserably

and so far have been able to get my fiance's laptop, desktop mac, iphone, my blakberry, my lap top and our printer/scanner/copier/fax to all work off our wireless network

bought a wireless card (netgear N300 usb adapter wna wna3100) and installed the program (a few times a this point) and the netgear program shows our wireless netwrok and acts like its connected to it and shows like 94% signal strength but

windows keeps giving me the pop up icon the reads "limited or no conectivity" when i open that and try to "repair" it then says windows couldn't finish repairing the problem because it cannot "enable my wireless adapter" and to make sure my adpadter is properly installed......

if I try to use windows to view wireless networks nothing comes up

Sometimes when I have that issue I have to reset my router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then I can connect. Worth a try.

Does the router have enough IP addresses available for all your devices?

I have no idea how can I find that out

just got to "device manager" and found the "network adapters" and found the one I installed and clicked on it and it says hte device is working properly

It should be in your router setup, usually http://192.168.1.1/

when you say router set up?

AT&T used my fiance's laptop as the "set up" one for the wireless router and I jsut went in there and couldnt find anything that looked like it was going to me the number the of IP addresses that the router could support

Your router has an IP addy, and Bryan's listing is the most common one for a router. Try it and see if you can get the router to show up.

Re: computer help with wireless networks (mikepags)

What version of Windows? All of them have some flavor of the items I ref'd below.

    Two things to try...

    1. Windows also has a built in wireless mgt service. If it is running it will grab the adapter first. Go into services and see if the "Wireless Zero Configuration" is running. If so turn it off and disable it.

    2. Is your Windows Firewall service running. If so try turning it off and see what happens. It is a service also where you can turn the entire firewall off thru the services console not just disable it thru the Windows Firewall config

The easy way is go to your START Button, Choose RUN and type in "services.msc" (no quotes). That will bring up the services console. Scroll down and look for the items I refed. These tips I sent are based on XP.

Also check the device manager to see if it is seeing the adapter correctly.

Right click on My Computer, choose properties, Choose the Hardware Tab and in the top section o that you will see Device Manager. Look for your adapter and see if it has a yellow "!" or a Red "x". If so the adapter is not installed correctly (possible a bad or incorrect driver).

Re: computer help with wireless networks (mikepags)

I run my XP with both those off.

There is no harm in leaving the Wireless Zero Service off since you are wanting to manage the adapter with the software that came with it.

The firewall I leave off also but there is some risk to that. Your "network" is behind the hardware firewall/router but if another PC gets infected with something (via opening a "bad" email or something) the XP box could be infected also.
