Novice seeks tech help on differences between 150/175/200 E-tecs

Novice here would appreciate some answers :)

    I am looking at the 2.6 V6 E-tecs 150/175/200hp.

The boat I am having built will support up to 200hp.

Can someone explain what are the particular technical differences between the 3 hp rated engines which add the additional hp ?

Is the additional hp only apparent at the top of the rev range say over 4000rpm with the torque curve being similar for all 3 at lesser revs ?

I am asking because of course I'd like to have the "kick" of the 200 available, and especially if at cruising revs ~3500rpm it gave the same economy as the 150, but if the tuning involves a bigger torque curve right through courtesy of higher fuel delivery then I've got a decision to make.

Apologies if the above questions are really stupid

    a) I have fouled on some site protocol ?

    b) Its a stupid question and the answer is obvious ?

The biggest difference between the 3 enignes is the exhaust valve that is found on the 200. This changes the length of the exhuast passage to give you a good hole shot and good punch at top end also. Im sure the mapping is different also.

The top speed difference will be about 5 MPH gained for each 25 HP difference. My policy over the years has been to get the motor with the most HP for that class of engine. In this case the class of engine is the 158 CI engine weighing in at 419 pounds for the 20 inch version. I recently purchased the 3 cylinder 90HP which was the highest HP of the 3 cylinder class. Back in 2000 I purchased a 115 HP V4 DI which was the highest HP of the V4's.

I have always felt that the fuel economy at a given speed will be about equal between the motors with the same cubic inches. Remember that you can throttle the bigger motor back to the same speed as the 150 or the 175 but you can't make the 150 or 175 go as fast as the 200.

If you can afford it go with the 200HP.

    Thanks for the responses

Is this variable exhaust valve used right accross the V6 range, or specifically for the V4 130hp and the V6 2.6 200hp - the following article seems to point to just the 130 and 200hp model - if so then this is a great feature, exhaust tuning does not usually cost any more fuel so should not affect economy - thanks for pointing that out :

Variable Exhaust Control: The new Evinrude E-TEC 60-degree 130hp and 200hp models feature an exclusive variable exhaust control valve. This innovative industry first delivers even more low-end power and top speed performance than ever before. The EMM (Electronic Management Module) electronically controls a valve in the motor’s exhaust housing. At slow speeds, the exhaust is tuned for maximum torque and low-end punch, providing for great hole shots and the power to plane heavy loads or pull multiple skiers. At higher speeds, the valve is electronically manipulated to re-tune the exhaust pulses for high speed running, providing additional top end speed to get to the other side of the lake first or to out-run a brewing storm on the horizon. This electronic control of the motor’s exhaust tuning has the additional benefit of improving overall efficiency for added fuel economy and increased range and is exclusive to Evinrude E-TEC.

The article is out of date. The 200 does not use the variable exhaust valve, but the 115hp has one. There is no 130 in the engine lineup this year.

    Thanks for that info

Would you have any further info on the differences between 150/175/200 ?

So far the only information I have turned up (from a dealer) is that the only difference is in the engine control ECU software ?

    TIA

I believed that the 200 had it also. See that learn something new every day. Do you know why its not on the 200. I did not understand in the service manual they only mentioned the vlave on the V-4. Now I ee why.

Tell us about the boat you are having built. Is it a center console, bass boat or like the Godspeed the UK sent to Jamestown back in the 1600s?

Re: Novice seeks tech help on differences bet ... (SC1800ETEC90)

The boat is going to be a new model being launched in September which is based on this one:

    http://www.ribcraft.co.uk/ribcraft750sport.html

It is 6.5m and I am customising the interior layout as it will be used in the Mediteranean not for SAS search and destroy missions

These types of boats - RIBs (Rigid inflatable) are very popular in Europe - the British built ones are generally built for rough seas whereas the Italien ones tend to have shallow V hull and are kitted out for sunbathing and cove hopping - but the ride deterioates quickly when the sea chops up (which is does frequently where I'm based).

It will weigh around 900kg/1985lbs including E-Tec 150/175/200.

Re: Novice seeks tech help on differences bet ... (tb993tt)

For those interested, I just got this back from a Technical Support Engineer at Evinrude in the UK:
Although the engines look similar there are differences within the powerheads with regards to cylinder heads, exhaust and inlet port timing. In addition the Engine Management Module programs are designed specifically for each model. I regret the manufactures do not publish torque curve graphs.

We generally find the lower horse power engines provide a better pull out and acceleration but understandably do not have the top end performance. It is probably worth consulting the boat designer to advise you on the best optimum power for a particular hull. Too little power will obviously cause a lack of performance and increase the strain on the engine but too much power can be wasteful if it is not required. I have seen several customers in the past, trade up to a larger engine when all they needed was the correct propeller!

This changes my mind somewhat, since top speed is not a priority.
