I have had this problem before with older houses. like you said the holes are to close to the edge of the door to just make it bigger so it wouldnt work to just widen the hole. What I have done in the past is to get a flat piece of stainless, aluminum, or brass and drill the correct size hole in it and attach it to your old door. Then you can drill the correct size hole and the correct position and keep your old doors. Lowes and the Depot also sell a brass plate that sandwiches the door front and back, they are made for exterior doors and aint cheap but it would work also.

remember guys his bolt mechanism is centered in the smaller hole. When he drills the bigger hole for the new style handles the bolt mechanism wont work because it wont be centered anymore...

Only if he drills it too high or too low.
All my doors are early 1900's (talk about some heavy doors )
Anyway, I filled mine with a chunk of wood out of the center of a holesaw (leftover piece from drilling a hole).
Then auto body filler (bondo, but not bondo brand), I filled the edges, the recess, and then sanded flat, smooth.
    And just started again.
Wish I'd known about that door knob hole jig sooner.

I sell commercial entry doors and trust me everybody grabs my handle and takes a turn.

Go online to Baldwin Brass. Everything they make is hand tooled, not cheap, but if anybody has it or can make it they will.

Tape will help and escutcheon will hide the rest.
May need a better drill also.

My little $20 home improvement projects usually wind up the far side of $500 by the time I'm done.
Plus I end up having lots of new tools to loan.

Trace it with a razor knife first. Use the back(non teeth side) side of your hole saw for a template.

Its not easy to do but if you can sandwich the door between two pieces of 1/2 inch or thicker plywood you should be able to align a new hole in the location of the old hole at the correct backset of the new door knob. You would need a long pilot drill bit in your hole saw to go through both plywood boards before the whole saw engages in the door to maintain the correct passage of the whole saw blade. Predrill the pilot hole entrance/exit in the plywood from both sides of the door first at the exact location.

C clamp the plywood tightly in position and lay it out as if it was a new door blank. If the new handle doesnt cover the old hole than an escution(sp) will cover it.

    Re: Door Knob's (walkswithbass)

Drill a 2 1/8" hole in 1 piece of 3/4" wood. Clamp the piece with the hole on one side and a piece without a hole on the other side of the door. Make sure it is TIGHT. Drill through the door from the hole side. If you have a new sharp hole saw, splintering will be at a minimum and if any does occur, it should easily cover with the new knob escutcheon.

    Re: Door Knob's (Basscatfrank)

I've done this several times. It works well and is inexpensive.
Put a piece of plywood on each side of the door.
Clamp tight. Drill new hole. Done.
Just make sure the center of the new hole lines up with the center of the old.
It will probably be 2 3/8" setback from the edge of the door.
