    Lowrance or Humminbird?????

Im looking to upgrade my electronics this year to at least one maybe two side imaging or structure scan units....Cant make my mind up which way to go.....Im trying to decide between the Lowrance HDS7 or 8, and the Humminbird 898si combo or 998si combo....Not trying to be a troll but what are the pluses and negatives of the the Lowrance and humminbird units??

The HDS8's retain water and you can't see the 998 in the direct sunlight....you're welcome!

My experience of owning both brands. Birds better side imaging and easier to use. Lowrance have better 2D sonar. Depends on which you spend more time on. I have Birds now but still spend the majority of time on mapping and 2D. How do you like that for reasoning?

Can of woms here huh! My .02 cents is.... I currently am running a Hbird. I bought it right before lowrance released their structure scan. comparing the two I think the Lowrance Gen1 had no real advantage over the bird and the seperate module for the structure scan is kind of a pia. the Gen2 ones coming out though look good. the structure mapping feature looks great better than the bird and the sonic hub is kind of cool. the seperate structure scan box is still a PIA though. just my humble opnion. I will be looking more closely at the LE gen2 if I get a new boat and need to rig it. which I hope too in fall of 2013.

    Two birds! A 1198 & a 596HD up front!

    Run both....... It's only money...

To be honest I am currently going from Lowrance to HB.....I only got to use HB a few times in the fall before the boat got put away and I was struggling.....I haven't been on the water with the HB enough yet to form an opinion but right now I am thinking very seriously of adding a Lowrance to the console with the HB....

Rumor has it the L's are failing at a rate that is too crazy and the repair turnaround is borderline insanity.

Thats actually a feature that sold me over a Bird. I like the "modular" system. I can use the side imaging and down scan on both my bow and console unit.

Do you unplug the structure scan box and move cables as needed? I thought it would be cool if one box could run 2 units but was talking with a lowrance rep and he said no 1 structure scan box per unit.

No fooling with anything. They are networked. My sonic hub also plugs into it. I can listen to Sirius music and adjust the controls from either Unit.

Some people like separate tranducers and run two. I just dont see the need for use.

You have to live with it. Get what you want. Go to the HB and lowrance boards and read. Look at images posted.

Well if one structure scan box runs 2 units I see an advantage lowrance. but i guess the disavantage was a lowrance rep telling me one structure scan box per unit.... not to impressive that a rep sent to a boat show to sell these does not even know how they work I was very clear on the question too so it was not a misunderstanding. Thanks for the info

I run the L brand, always have, always will, period. I will get, and post dealer results if you'd like, I guarantee you won't if I do. Failure Rate %, Repair Turnaround Duration.
Why do you think I didn't post full brand name? I'm not in to bashing any manufacturer publicly, L could be the initial for anything. I refuse to post the country they are shipped to for repair, but it starts with a C. Or, at least that's the rumor, I'm not in Tulsa so I can't confirm, just a rumor.
