    Pond Structure Advise

I have a 2.5 acre pond on the ranch and I need to put some structure in it. I have plenty of bricks and cinder blocks for weights. About the only trees on the ranch are Mesquite and they rot to fast.

    Any Ideas??

good luck with your honey hole. Bamboo lasts the longest. Should be a how to article on FLW. Using a bucket, one piece of PVC and bamboo.

There's also an old BASS book on pond management. Could be helpful.

Three skids to form a teepee wired together with weight inside and some brush inside also.

structure refers to the basic underwater topography of a given body of water, Cover, refers to items such as aquatic vegetation and submerged objects. Just FYI. With that being said, I think it would help you out tremendously to apply different types of cover to your fishin hole. Check out some of the non invasice aquatic species for some of you're shallower areas. Also, I'd go w/artifical and natural cover. Small rock/concrete piles are always good if you can acquire the means to transport and disperse. PVC and other manmade objects work decent. I'd imagine you could wrangle up a few mesquites, or whatever natural trees you have, and place them together in clumps. Having all of these items will help your fishing. You never know exactly what type of cover/structure fish want to be on in a given day. If using PVC, make sure and hit the pipes w/a coarse sandpaper to rough them up. This will make them more prone to growing small aquatic growths on them making them a little more natural. Good luck Josh

Old tires. Big reels spools that heavy wire comes on. Pallets. My brother even has an old car body in his pond...engine, tranny, etc. removed.

If its already dug and has water in it, changing the structure will be hard- structure components of a lake are usually better done with the bulldozer and perhaps some loads of rock for spawning ad rip-rap. Some people have been known to put rock, etc on ice during the winter and let it drop when the ice melts. The mesquite or any other type of wood is irrelevant for structure of a lake. Use the mesquite in the bar-be-que.

One of these days bass fishermen will learn the definition of structure versus cover. I guess I'll continue to look like an azz by assuming they are using the terms correctly

Wooden shipping pallets make good cover. Most places throw these things away so would be cheap to put together. Nail a board to one end, put bricks in it for weight, stick branches in the open slots in the pallet.

My buddy and I made some pvc trees back in Nov. and set them in 5 gallon buckets with quick-crete. We sunk them all around his boat dock on LOZ.

If you can get your hands on some cedar tops, that would probably last pretty well. Isn't cedar pretty common in TX?

I'll willingly plead guilty to being an azz- I've learned a lot of things from azzes though! Their method makes their lessons stick longer!

But...if you are going to have good, well-managed fishing as an aspect of your hunting ranch business, people who can afford to use your services will lose faith (and likely shake their head and chuckle, in private) when common terms are misused by someone whose business it is to know the correct terminology. Knowing the correct definitions demonstrates your attention to detail, expertise and overall knowledge. Just sayin- if it's your business, and when it comes down to it, you can call a catfish a bass if you want

Came back to check my responses and your still being one. I don't give a damn if people chuckle cause I'm not using the correct word..Structure/Cover,,Whatever.

vinyle siding works great you can usualy find people trowing away cut off scraps or old siding when they are redoing a house but you cut it in 2" to 4" wide strips what ever lenth you want stick it in buckets of sack creat to make it look like a big porcupine then throw them out in big groups or long lines also 1x4 and 1x2 cut into difernt lenths and stuck in the mud to make stake beeds work good also
