So it is OK to use a surface gap plug in this engine??? Do these plugs ark to the top of the piston? Will this not burn / scare the piston? I'm asking![]()

I believe they arc around the bottom of the plug.
Surface gap plugs are cold - cold - cold. Are you having problems fouling plugs?...or are you wearing them out?
OK, Here's the history on this engine. I was convinced to disconnect the VRO system and start mixing oil (XD 25) with gas at the 50:1 ratio. Now the problem is the engine idles ruff, sometimes stalls, and is fouling the plugs. It smokes really bad at an idle and trolling speed. A mechanic friend suggested leaning the fuel mixture to a 60:1 or possibly 70:1 ratio and using a hotter spark plug. I'm starting to wonder if I should reconnect the VRO system.

We ran dozens of VRO equipped outboards over the years and found the system to be pretty reliable.
Your motor came with the VRO-2 setup that sensed oil pump pulses and could send a no oil warning if it malfunctioned or was allowed to run out. If you reconnect it, you will want to make sure that the wiring is hooked up to enable the warning system. It would be a good idea to test it while you still have mixed gas in the tank by letting the oil line run dry and waiting for the warning horn.
