1998 Intruder power mods????

Hey guys I have a friend with1998 175hp Intruder. Do you guys know of any mods to these motors the would increase hp that would not shorten the life of the motor too much?

Short and correct answer is no.

Everything you do that nets more HP will shorten the motors life.

For about $3500 you can get Gorden Montague at Montys' racing to rebuild it and port it for about 210hp at the prop.

You can get the heads shaved but this will not be much of a gain on the 175.

These motors are really hard to port becuase of the closed deck design. The optical ignition system also limits the rpms. It isn't good much above 6000rpm.

From what I understand OMC did work a few of the small bore loopers but nothing ever came of it.

I think ChampionMan might have some knowledge of these. Maybe he'll chime in.

Thanks for the input. This motor really hasn't had anything done to it sinse it was new. It's been a good one. It's had a lot of hours put on it sinse 1998 and a new set of reed valves may do wonders!

Late 1997 I had Gorden Montague at Montys' racing work on my 1996 175 Faststrike. The motor before that took out a cyl that I was Lucky OMC covered it because it was just out of warranty. The motor has run flawless ever since Gorden had his hands in it. It for sure is the fastest 186 Champ around my area and even going around most older 200s and some 225s. Would I spend the money again, Yes. Good luck.
