The short version.
2011 GMC Sierra 2500 diesel bought November of 2010.
Truck has been great since then, 15000 miles and has been bulletproof.
Got a GM recall notice to have the DEF system recalibrated to prevent freezing, so I took it in.
20 minutes after I left the dealer I got a "Low Coolant" warning. Got home and checked the tank, it was full to the top.
Dealer was closed for Christmas, so I figured take it in after the holiday. When I tried to start it 2 days later, the batteries were absolutely dead. Couldn't even light the interior lights.
Got the truck started, took it to the dealer, they said a sensor was bad in the coolant tank. They replaced it, pulled the codes for the battery failure and they told me it was on "open circut" that no longer existed. They said they pressure checked the coolant system and all was fine.
Left the dealer and 20 miles down the road, got another "Low Coolant" warning. Called and made another appointment.
The electrical gremlins started again. No remote start, no remote door locks, "Trailer brake system failure" warning, etc. Took it in and the dealer said a hairline crack in the surge tank (GM has a TSB out) They ordered one and I brought the truck back in to have it replaced 3 days later.
Dealer said system was pressure checked, electrical diagnostics were run, recall code was reflashed and the truck was good to go.
Left the dealer, 20 miles down the road got a "Low Coolant" again. Got home and there was coolant all over the front quarter and inside the engine compartment. Coolant was running out from under the front.
Took it back to the dealer, again, and when I started it there was a big belch of white smoke and the truck ran like crap until it warmed up. Dropped the truck off and my wife and I went to breakfast (dealer said 30 minute repair). My phone rings and it's the dealer, blown head gasket.
Total so far, over 100 hours of repair time done and coming up. Truck has been down for a month, 5 times in the shop. All since the day before Christmas Eve.
Got off the phone with the dealer a couple of hours ago. 57 hours projected repair time.
My first General Motors product. 1 year old, 15,000 easy miles, completely stock as the day I picked it up
Unbelievable, just need to vent out.![]()
