    Frequency of injector cleaning

So yet another question for the ever dependable Don. How often in terms of hours or the passage of time do you recommend servicing injectors? I'll be picking up my new boat with a 2008 150 Opti that has 13 hrs on it, all under 4k. Just wondering when I should be considering this. I'm getting it from a dealer so I plan to ask what servicing they have done since receiving the boat.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

I have read a post where Don said ( on a 3 liter Opti ) motor 3 years or 300 hours . I would say the same for your motor .....leave a SN from your motor .

I recommend servicing rails/injectors/direct injectors: Every 3 years, or 300 hours, whichever occurs FIRST.

Even with only 13 hours on the motor?

I would definitely do it with that few of hours on it for fear of the fuel being gummed up and clogging the injectors all from sitting. Buying from a dealer you don't know the previous owner and how well he took care of the fuel system.

Believe it or not- the injectors are even MORE likely to be restricted/dirty with LOW hours (as compared to an engine that's been run regularly, with fresh fuel and additives). Fuel that sits (in small quantity areas, especially) tends to congeal... and this congealed fuel can be very detrimental.

Good point Don. The dealer I am buying from is the one that sold the boat originally. I'll ask if any servicing was done when they took it in. Did I see on you website that it possible to remove these items and send them to you for servicing?

Yep. That's what I saw. Do you have any instructions on removal and re-installation. As long as specials tools or instrumentation is required I'm ok with doing, just need to know what to send and proper procedures.

Also, what do you recommend for a shop manual?

OEM Mercury Manual is your BEST guide. That's (IMHO) the only way to go!

    Normally, you're going to:

-Relieve AIR PRESSURE (port side rail)
-Relieve FUEL PRESSURE (stb side rail)
    -Carefully unclip/unplug ALL 12 injectors
-Remove rails (Leave ALL hoses attached to rails- EVERY SINGLE ONE)
-Depress fuel shrader valve, allow all fuel to drain into a container
-Wrap everything carefully in bubble wrap... and double box with service request form.
-Insure the shipment adequately to REPLACE components if lost or damaged!

I'll be glad to provide further pointers by phone, if you wish to give me a call (after we return to the office, Tuesday).

Thanks Don. I don't pick the boat up until Friday. This may be a winter project for me so I will get back in touch with you at that time.

    Thanks,
    Bruce
